"Everybody lies" - in recent years, this phrase has become famous thanks to the popularity of the TV series "House" and "Theory of Lies". Do you really need a lie? Are we the only beings who lie?

Lying is an integral part of our life. Moreover, we know how to lie from birth. Research has shown that babies often get attention for no particular reason, just to get attention. If twins are born, then they literally try to shout down each other, in order to get more breast milk, even if they are not very hungry.

Roughly the same situation is observed in animals. Some species of predatory insects in the process of evolution have learned to copy the light signal of fireflies, which, in turn, fly at them and become victims.

The most interesting results are shown by our closest relatives - primates. When we observed groups of chimpanzees, we noticed interesting kinds of lies. When one individual saw a lying banana, she pretended not to notice him and slowly approached him. There were times when monkeys hid their find from prying eyes. It has also been noticed that primates have real conspiracies. Several individuals conspired and overthrew the leader of the article.

There is also a social lie, when some individuals pretend that they relate better to someone than they really are, does not resemble anyone?

We figured out that lying is not a unique human trait.
People rarely lie over food or for collusion. Our lies are more sophisticated and in many ways have become rituals. There are many socially acceptable lies. We allow not to pay attention to the fact that someone lied to us about our appearance or the prepared dish. And we ourselves often lie "on trifles."

We also allow theater and film actors to lie. We understand that everything that happens on the stage is a lie, but we admit it, as we know that this is the work of the actors.

There are other professions where you need to be able to lie, for example: politicians, businessmen, lawyers, lawyers, sales managers. But their lies are not entirely socially acceptable. They often mix lies and truth, but without our consent.

Can everyone recognize a lie?
Is Recognizing Lies a Gift or a Skill? Like many things in our life, it is not so simple to recognize a lie. There are many factors that influence verification talent. For example, how sociable you are, how attentive you are, and even your hobbies in life.

There are also people who by nature know how to see lies.
My close friend, has such a gift, she literally sees people through and through. When I asked her how she does it, she answered like this “I read Alan Pease's book as a child, made sure that everything is so and did not return to this topic any more,” she has been susceptible to false signals since childhood.

If you take the professionals, then among them I like the story of Joe Navarro. When he was a child, his family emigrated from Cuba to the United States, Joe did not know the language well and therefore, in order to understand his peers, he watched them. Soon he didn't need words. He later took a job with the FBI where he became a "walking lie detector."

But what about ordinary people?
Who do not have a predisposition to verification. If you refer to your memory, you will surely recall many episodes when you were deceived and how you then thought, "I felt that something was wrong." When polling average people about how they see a lie, many say something like "He does not speak fluently", "Averts his eyes to the side", "behavior changes", "hand gestures become strange", but no one really can say who sees what, they kind of “feel”.

Is it possible to develop this skill in order not only to feel, but also to understand?

A person can develop any skill. We can learn anything.
You don't have to listen to those who say “he has a talent by nature, you can't compare with him,” almost always a huge amount of work and diligence is behind the “talent”. If you are told that you will not succeed, never listen. We can learn everything, we just need to try and develop in different directions.

The ability of our brain to assimilate and acquire abilities is called neuroplasticity. In us by nature itself is inherent in learning new things. Therefore, if something does not work out for you, then just try more, analyze your mistakes. There is a very persistent myth in society that talents are transmitted genetically. In reality, it is not genetic transmission that is involved, but genetic predisposition.

For example, if a father is a talented musician, then his children will be the same. But if you understand that such children are constantly being told about music and told about the adventures of their father, then there is nothing surprising that excellent musicians grow out of them. Remember, everything can be learned.

In conclusion, I will give some tips on how to develop the skill of a verifier.
  • First of all, study literature, try to learn as much as possible about human nature. And do not dwell only on the psychology of lies. Study social psychology, human evolution, brain structure. The more diverse your knowledge about a person, the easier it will be for you to understand the behavior when lying.
  • Try to train mindfulness - this does not mean that you only need to sit at the simulators for micromimics. Watch people, great places for this, train stations, airports, cafes and just on a bench in the park. Just memorizing gestures is fundamentally the wrong approach! We must try to understand the situation and why this gesture looks like this. For example: crossing arms on the chest is a sign of defense, because in this way we protect our important organs. Try to understand other gestures, where are they from? Could it be a social aspect? Evolutionary, maybe?
  • Do something that develops you as a whole. For example, you can study psychology and take photographs. Read books and watch movies, listen to music. Try to have different hobbies, so you will not get bored of any of them and you can, every time, look at them with a fresh look.
