These cases of bank robberies are impressive in their thoughtfulness and audacity.
TOP 5 ideal bank robberies. Shot from the movie "Ocean's 11"
Bank robberies are one of the most popular topics in cinema and literature. Many seemingly fictional stories are based on real events. For example, on March 19, 1831, the first bank robbery in the history of the United States took place. The victim was City Bank of New York. Then the English immigrant Edward Smith managed to take out $ 245 thousand. However, Smith did not manage to use the loot - very soon he was seized by the guards. The thief went to jail for five years and forcibly returned every single cent.
The PaySpace Magazine editors decided to recall several daring and vivid bank robberies both of the last century and the new one. Some of them, by the way, have not been disclosed to this day.
The building of the Societe Generale bank in Nice.
This story took place in Nice on July 16, 1976 and is known rather not because of the amount stolen ("only" $ 9.8 million), but because of the extravagant style. A group of fraudsters led by the well-known criminal of the time, Albert Spaggiari, on a holiday opened the floor in a bank building and infiltrated the Societe Generale vault in Nice. But instead of hastily leaving the bank with their loot, the robbers spent several days in the building, having a picnic and drinking wine. According to legend, before leaving, Spaggiari left an inscription on the wall: "Without hatred, without violence and without weapons."
The next robbery took place in London on July 12, 1987. Knightsbridge became the victim bank. The ease of the crime committed does not fit in with the hefty sum of money stolen. The robbers disguised as clients entered the bank building and, threatening with weapons, which the guards did not notice at the entrance, took out $ 113 million.
Robbery of a diamond vault in Antwerp.
Not so long ago, namely in 2003, a diamond storage facility was robbed in the Belgian port of Antwerp. The crime has become one of the largest of its kind. Fraudsters were able to get to the cells in which diamond brokers stored jewelry through an underground passage. Out of 160 cells, the robbers opened 123. The exact amount of damage is still unknown. By some estimates, it was about billions of dollars. The jewels themselves were also not found - the organizers of the theft never opened their hiding place. The leader of the group was sentenced to 10 years in prison, the other members received 5 years in prison.
In Brazil, criminals robbed a bank in the old well-known way - breaking a tunnel.
Another striking bank robbery took place on August 6, 2005 in the Brazilian city of Fortaleza. As a result of a carefully prepared operation, $ 76.8 million was stolen from the bank's safes. The criminals, in preparation for the robbery, rented a small villa next to the bank and from there dug a tunnel to the vault. At the same time, wanting to reach the goal in complete comfort, the robbers conducted electricity and ventilation into the tunnel.
The "robbery of the century" in Sweden was carried out with the help of a helicopter.
In September 2009, a daring robbery shocked Sweden as well. In 20 minutes, the robbers stole a billion crowns ($ 116.6 million) from the bank's vault and took the money away by helicopter. Here is how it was. In the morning, this transport of intruders landed on the bank building. Four armed robbers descended into the bank's operating room through a glass pyramid-shaped skylight on the roof, blew up cash safes and raised money onto the roof using a special winch. Another moment - the criminals and the trail disappeared.
The police arrived at the crime scene just minutes after it started, but could not do anything. Police helicopters were unable to take off from an airfield in the suburbs of Stockholm, as a bag with the inscription "bomb" was hung on the hangar doors. It turned out to be a fake, but the time had already been lost. And the patrol cars could not rush in time to chase, because on the roads leading from the bank building, someone scattered steel "hedgehogs". Thus, the criminals thought through everything to the smallest detail.
