US companies lost $500,000 by hiring new employees.
Matthew Isaac Knuth, 38, was arrested in the United States on charges of helping North Korean IT professionals get remote jobs in American companies. The arrested man created conditions for specialists from North Korea, using fake data, to impersonate US citizens.
Knuth organized a so — called "laptop farm" - he received computers sent in the name of a fictitious citizen, installed remote access programs on laptops, and allowed North Korean hackers to work from China, creating the illusion of a presence in the United States. For his services, Knut received regular cash payments from a foreign intermediary known as Yang Di. As a result of the actions of Knut and his accomplices, American companies suffered losses of more than $500,000 aimed at auditing and restoring system security.
During the period from July 2022 to August 2023, North Korean IT specialists earned more than $250,000 under this scheme. The amounts were transferred to accounts linked to North Korea and China. According to the US Department of Justice, the money earned was used to finance North Korea's military program.
Knut is charged with fraud, computer damage, identity theft and illegal employment of foreigners. If convicted, Knut faces up to 20 years in prison.
