Kazakh authorities have handed over to Thai police a 43-year-old Russian man who, according to law enforcement, in 2022 extorted over $50,000 in cryptocurrency from a Russian couple on Koh Samui.

According to the Thai police, Danil Ugai, as part of a group of six people, extorted 1.8 million Thai baht (about $ 51,500)worth of cryptocurrency in September 2022 a married couple named Abdullina, who was engaged in a real estate business on the resort island. Five members of the group were detained in hot pursuit (three Kazakhstanis and two Germans). Ugay was recently in Kazakhstan, where he was arrested.

Initially, the arrest warrant was issued by the Surat Thani provincial court, and later the Russian was put on the international wanted list. Danil Ugay admitted that the detention order refers specifically to him. Now the suspect is placed in a temporary detention cell of the Koh Samui Police Department.
