How will the cyberattack affect the country's space industry?
The Japanese Space Agency (Japan's Space Exploration Agency, JAXA) reported a cyber incident. JAXA assumed that the hack occurred in the implementation of Active Directory, after which they conducted additional research and confirmed the fact of unauthorized access.
JAXA then shut down part of its network, including its intranet, and sought outside help to determine the scale of the incident, and the Japanese government asked JAXA to take countermeasures. It is noted that confidential information was not stolen.
The JAXA agency was previously hacked in 2016. A Chinese national was charged with the incident, which is believed to have been one of 200 attacks on Japanese facilities initiated by the accused. The Japanese authorities were able to start criminal prosecution of the alleged criminal only in 2021. According to investigators, the accused is a man in his early 30s who is a computer engineer and a member of the Chinese Communist Party.
