Did you think TikTok and Instagram are safe for kids?
Schools in Israel are warning parents to remove TikTok, Instagram and other social media apps from their children's mobile phones. This is due to concerns about the publication by Hamas of videos of hostages being killed. Since the start of the Hamas attacks over the weekend, violent videos have already started circulating on platforms.
Users report messages from Jewish schools asking parents to limit their children's use of social media because of the spread of disturbing content. According to the BBC, there is a concern that such materials can cause stress in children.
One of the messages reads: "Dear parents, we have learned that videos of hostages begging for life will soon be published. Please remove the TikTok and Instagram apps from your children's mobile phones."
These warnings are distributed all over the world, including the United States and the United Kingdom. For example, the principal of The Frisch School in New Jersey also sent similar warnings. According to The Times of Israel, a letter from the school's principal, Rabbi Eli Tsiner, states:: "Local psychologists contacted us with information that the Israeli government strongly recommends that parents ask their children to delete Instagram and TikTok. We strongly advise our students to do so as soon as possible."
Some users believe that the advice to delete social networks from children's phones is good, regardless of the situation.
Earlier, the European Union sent a letter to Elon Musk, the owner of the social platform, warning that the platform allows the dissemination of illegal content and misinformation.
Criticism of social networks is growing on both sides. For some, dealing with disturbing images of hostages or military events is seen as censorship.
After surprise attacks by Hamas, at least 1,200 people were killed and thousands were injured, according to CNN. According to some reports, up to 150 people may be taken hostage.
