Apple is implementing a security benchmark in the latest update.

Apple has introduced updates to its operating systems, including iOS 17.3 and iPadOS 17.3, as well as updates to watchOS 10.3 and macOS Sonoma 14.3. The main feature of iOS 17.3 is a new feature called "Stolen Device Protection". The function is not intended to find a stolen iPhone or iPad, but rather to prevent thieves from accessing the user's personal data.

This feature first appeared in the developer beta version of iOS 17.3 and turned out to be quite useful. If an iPhone or iPad running iOS 17.3 is stolen, you can block access to the system by activating the Face ID or Touch ID identification requirement. This works even if the kidnapper has a password to the device, so they won't be able to enter their biometric data and block the owner's access to the device.

This option automatically sets a one-hour system delay before changing the password if the phone or tablet is located in an unfamiliar location. The "Stolen Device Protection" feature will not stop the thief, but it will significantly complicate his task. This option is available for both iPhone and iPad:
  • iPhone models XS, XS Max or XR released in 2018, as well as models iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14 and iPhone 15. The feature is also supported on iPhone SE models of the 2nd and 3rd generations.
  • iPad Mini 5th generation and later, standard iPad 6th generation and later, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, and all iPad Pro models.

You can check for an update in the system settings. To enable the Stolen Device Protection feature, you need to use two-factor authentication for Apple ID and enable the device's passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, Locator, and Geolocation Service
parameter on your iPhone.

You can enable the Stolen Device Protection feature in the Settings app.
  1. Open the Settings app and select "Face ID and Passcode";
  2. Enter your device's passcode;
  3. Tap to enable or disable the Stolen Device Protection feature.

If you try to turn off the Stolen Device Protection feature while you are in an unusual location, a system delay for data protection will start before you can turn it off. You should disable the Stolen Device Protection feature before selling, transferring, or exchanging your iPhone.
