ATMs were no longer a gimmick many years ago. Even older people are accustomed to this device and regularly withdraw their pension or salary from their card. However, we rarely think about the principles of operation of ATMs and learn many of the nuances only when we directly encounter them. We decided to make a small selection of little-known facts about the work of ATMs.

40 bills at a time

The ATM dispenses no more than 40 bills in one operation, which is associated with the feeding mechanism. Usually, the screen displays the available bills (20, 50, 100, 200 UAH), so when withdrawing money, you can immediately estimate the maximum amount the ATM can dispense at one time.

Time to think

The money issued by the ATM must be collected within 30 seconds. Otherwise, they will be taken back by the ATM. The card must be picked up within 40 seconds after its return by the device, otherwise it will be detained by the ATM. If you ponder the amount you want to withdraw for more than 15 seconds, the screen will display the message: "Need more time?" To return to the screen with the choice of the amount, you need to click "Yes".

Cash cassettes

Money at an ATM is stored in so-called cassettes. There are several cassettes in the ATM (4-6), and each of them is configured for a specific banknote. One cassette holds about 2.5 thousand banknotes. The question that often worries customers is how an ATM verifies the authenticity and denomination of the issued bills? The answer is no way. No standard ATM verifies either the denomination of the banknotes or their authenticity. The insertion of banknotes into cassettes is entirely on the conscience of the bank tellers, and the installation of cassettes is the responsibility of the collectors. There have been cases when an ATM dispensed larger bills instead of smaller ones. But such cases are rather rare, because two people are usually engaged in filling the banknotes into cassettes (one "charges", the second checks and controls). The ATM also has a cassette for rejected bills, for bills,

Storage conditions for ATM

The outdoor ATM is 100% waterproof. However, it is sensitive to cold. Sometimes, when the temperature drops below 10-15 degrees of frost, ATMs can be capricious: they do not turn on, block the operation of the mechanism for issuing money, etc.

Famous ATM manufacturers

Most often, we pay attention to which bank owns a particular ATM, regardless of its brand. The world's largest ATM manufacturers are Wincor Nixdorf, Diebold and NCR Corporation.

Terms of use

Unfortunately, more and more information is emerging about the growing ATM fraud. You can protect yourself from this only by adhering to the basic rules of working with an ATM, namely:
  • use familiar ATMs whenever possible. In case you notice changes in the appearance of the device (keyboard, card slots), it is better not even to start the operation and use another ATM;
  • when dialing a PIN-code, cover the keyboard with your hand;
  • the most protected are ATMs located on the territory of the bank, as they are regularly inspected by the bank's employees. However, this protection is also not absolute.
