At least eight well-known opposition figures were among the victims.

In India, several opposition politicians reported attempts to hack their Apple smartphones. This is reported by TASS .

According to the report, Shashi Tharoor, a representative of the Indian National Congress, was among the victims. He posted on the social network X (formerly Twitter) screenshots of notifications from Apple, which referred to attempts by "state-sponsored" attackers to remotely hack his iPhone. Tharoor expressed suspicion that his political rivals from the ruling Indian People's Party were behind the attack.

Similar notifications were received by at least eight other oppositionists. Some of them also publicly accuse the government and the ruling party of trying to hack their phones.

Apple said that it does not attribute such attacks to specific countries and noted that sometimes such notifications can be erroneous. The Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnav, representing the ruling party, expressed concern about the information voiced by opposition politicians and promised to conduct an investigation with the possible involvement of Apple.

The incidents occurred six months before the general election, which will be held in the spring of 2024. The BJP can use them to extend the rule of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a third term. In the summer of 2023, the main opposition parties formed a coalition to jointly oppose the ruling party.
