"Employees of the Department for Combating the Illegal Use of Information and Communication Technologies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Vologda region detained a suspect in illegal influence on the critical information infrastructure of the Russian Federation," said Irina Volk, an official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

According to investigators, last year a resident of Vologda, being a regional sales representative of a mobile operator, independently registered about 200 SIM cards every month to fulfill the sales plan. At the same time, he used fictitious passport data of citizens of the Russian Federation and entered false information about mobile subscribers in the information and telecommunications networks of the mobile operator.

"The attacker activated SIM cards, and then sold them to third parties via the Internet. According to preliminary estimates, the income from online sales could reach one hundred thousand rubles a month. In the future, these subscriber numbers were used by scammers to commit remote scams. Thus, the illegal actions of the defendant caused harm to the business reputation of the mobile operator.

During the searches, the police seized information carriers, mobile phones, SIM box modules and about six thousand SIM cards, including unregistered ones," Irina Volk said.

A criminal case was opened against the suspect by the investigator of the Investigative Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Vologda region on the grounds of a crime provided for in part two of Article 274.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

"On the same day, the police detained another local resident who committed similar actions. A procedural decision was also made against him.
