The Prosecutor's office of New York handed over to the court more than 80 thousand pages of the case related to charges against a member of the US House of Representatives from the Republican Party George Santos (George Santos). Santos has pleaded not guilty to defrauding party sponsors, stealing money from his own campaign, fraudulently receiving unemployment benefits, and lying to Congress about being a millionaire, according to the Associated Press's STLToday.
In total, the prosecutor's office charged Santos with 13 counts, including fraud using electronic means, money laundering, theft of public funds and making false statements. If convicted, Santos, who is known for being the first openly gay Republican in the House of Representatives, faces up to 20 years in prison.
Santos called the federal investigation a "witch hunt", promising not only to stay in Congress, but also to seek re-election. Republican leaders called on his colleague to abandon plans to re-nominate his candidacy in the next election. However, they could not exclude him from their ranks, since they have a minimal advantage in the House of Representatives over the Democrats, and a change in the balance of power will potentially negatively affect the chances of the current US president for re-election in 2024.
The next meeting is scheduled for September 7, 2023. In the meantime, Santos remains at large, although he was advised to notify the police of any movements around the country.
Santos was interrogated in 2017 by the police for possible links to an international carder group. The congressman from New York told his acquaintances that he was a secret informant of the security forces, but it is impossible to confirm or deny this: Santos turned out to be one of the most prominent hoaxers of his time, who began his journey into American high politics by posing as a transvestite on the beaches of Brazil.

The first gay Republican in the US House of Representatives, whose trial began in July 2023, has been charged with 10 new counts. Now 35-year-old George Santos (George Santos) is suspected of fraud with the use of electronic means of communication, identity theft under aggravating circumstances, as well as fraud with access devices.
The new indictment of the prosecutor's office indicates that Santos repeatedly and without permission withdrew money from the credit cards of his donors (both major sponsors and ordinary Americans), after which he spent it on his election campaign and the campaigns of other candidates, and also simply withdrew it to his own bank account. As an example, prosecutors cite the case when Santos stole a donor's credit card number to transfer more than $ 11,000 to his accounts. On another occasion, he swindled $ 50,000 from two other donors using a fictitious nonprofit organization. With this money, he closed other debts and paid for designer goods.
According to investigators, Santos only pretended to be rich in order to impress the leaders of the Republican Party. In particular, he talked about a fictitious loan for the election campaign in the amount of 500 thousand dollars in order to receive additional financial support. He also lied about making donations worth tens of thousands of dollars.
It is known that back in 2017, Santos was interrogated for a possible connection with an international carder group. The New York Congressman himself, who began his career playing a drag queen on Brazilian beaches, told his friends that he was a secret informant of the security forces.
