The office of San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu has filed a lawsuit against the owners of 16 of the world's largest websites that allow women and girls to be "undressed" in photos using AI without their consent.

The document alleges violations of state and federal laws on deepfake pornography, revenge pornography, and child sexual abuse materials.

"[ ... ] Generative AI has huge prospects, but as with all new technologies, there are unintended consequences and criminals seeking to use the new technology to their advantage. We must clearly understand that this is not an innovation — this is sexual violence [ ... ], " Chiu said.

The websites involved in the case offer user-friendly interfaces for uploading photos of clothed women and girls to further create realistic pornographic versions. They are virtually indistinguishable from real images and are used to extort, intimidate, threaten and humiliate, the statement said.

In total, the sites were visited more than 200 million times in the first half of 2024. Some of them allow you to create photos only for adults, while others do not block the request when uploading images of children.

Authorities are demanding the removal of websites, fines, and an injunction against future illegal activities.
