Employees of the Department for Combating the Illegal Use of Information and Communication Technologies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region stopped the activities of accomplices of remote scammers.
"As a result of operational search activities, the police detained two unemployed local residents who transferred access to their mobile bank to Internet scammers. Those, in turn, used it to issue virtual bank cards, to which funds of deceived citizens were later transferred. For a one-time transfer of access to a mobile bank, the defendants received about 10-17 thousand rubles.
According to investigators, for the period from 2021 to 2023, about 500 cards were issued in this way in various credit organizations, which later fell into the hands of fraudsters.
In addition, the investigators found that one of the detainees, in addition to issuing bank cards, may be involved in the purchase of SIM cards in order to register fake accounts in various messengers, which were later also used for fraudulent purposes," said Irina Volk, an official representative of the Russian Interior Ministry.
An investigator of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region opened a criminal case on the grounds of a crime under Article 187 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
"During searches at the residential addresses of the defendants, 15 bank and 80 SIM cards, a laptop, seven mobile phones and other items of evidentiary value were seized.
Currently, one of the detainees is in custody. In relation to the other, a measure of procedural compulsion was chosen in the form of an obligation to appear. The preliminary investigation continues, " Iryna Volk added.
