Chinese authorities and Tencent conducted a unique campaign and stopped the creation and distribution of cheats using artificial intelligence (AI) for the popular game VALORANT, detaining a group of 10 people who participated in the scheme, which has already managed to bring attackers about $ 4.1 million.

Chinese law enforcement agencies, together with Tencent, have arrested 10 people involved in creating and distributing artificial intelligence-based cheats for the popular VALORANT game. It was a coordinated operation spanning several provinces, including Zhejiang and Chongqing, that led to the arrest of the suspects on September 15, 2023.

The suspects, who were allegedly responsible for creating and selling cheats, confessed to their illegal activities. This is a historic step by the Chinese authorities in the fight against cheating in the gaming community, as this problem has become a real problem among the community.

Of the ten people detained, two were accused of directly creating AI-based cheats, and the remaining eight acted as intermediaries, distributing cheats to users. According to the Yijiang Provincial Public Security Report, the volume of illegal transactions related to this activity exceeded 30 million yuan (approximately 4.1 million US dollars) as of September 22, 2023.

In addition to the arrests, important evidence was seized during the operation, including 17 computers, 11 mobile phones, source codes and various hardware components. Among the detained individuals, two were identified as the creators of the cheats, and the remaining eight acted as agents responsible for distributing them to users.

Tencent and Riot Games emphasized their commitment to fair play and zero tolerance for cheating in an official statement, emphasizing that they are committed to working closely with players to maintain a positive gaming environment. This event confirms their determination to act against the developers of cheats, as in the case of previous cases of cheating in the games PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Overwatch.

Riot really stand up to this evil

Riot Games, the developer of the VALORANT game, has previously implemented anti-cheating measures, such as the Vanguard system designed to detect and prevent cheating. However, these AI-based cheats work outside of the operating system and often avoid detection by traditional anti-cheat methods, which is a significant problem.

Moreover, Riot actively collaborated with Tencent's security, technical and legal teams to ensure a safe and fair gaming environment. The developers are determined to further strengthen their defense against the evolving methods and techniques of cheating that undermine the reputation of the entire game. From the beginning of August to September 18, more than 39,000 accounts and more than 10,000 computers were blocked due to cheat activity in VALORANT. In addition, in China, cheating in online games is considered a serious crime, so tough prosecution of cheat developers will always be a priority here. It is a pity that CIS bodies do not follow the same example.
