The damage to the world economy from intentional Internet outages, mainly the governments of various countries reached $ 8.05 billion in 2021 - such calculations published company Top10VPN. She estimates that the cost of internet outages for the global economy has grown by 235% since 2016.
18,225 hours is the total duration of major network outages around the world. The disconnection of the Internet in general left 11857 hours, the disconnection of social networks - 6368 hours. WhatsApp is the most blocked platform with a total number of crashes of 6,236 hours, followed by Facebook (6.2 thousand hours) and Instagram (6.19 thousand hours).
Last year was a record for the number of such blackouts - 122 in 21 countries. It cost Iraq the most: the country's economy lost $ 2.3 billion, followed by Sudan, India, Venezuela and Iran.
Financially, losses have affected not only the formal economy, but also the informal, especially in the least developed countries. That is why, as well as due to indirect consequences (loss of investor confidence and unsustainable development), the authors consider their assessment to be conservative: it does not take into account the long-term losses from the Internet shutdown.
Most of the incidents related to the complete blocking of the Internet in any country or its large region, as well as restrictions on certain social networks, are caused by the desire of governments to control information. Usually, such actions by the authorities become a response to protests or riots, especially during elections.
In terms of the duration of the Internet outage, Myanmar is the leader, where residents of the states of Rahineh and Chin did without access to the World Wide Web for 203 days. The indicators for Chad (197 days) and some regions of India (175 days) are similar. In Sudan, it took 65 days without the Internet, and the rest of the blockages lasted much less: from 7.5 to 456 hours.
