Anna:
I was vacationing in Thailand this winter, I had to withdraw money from the card. I am a distrustful person by nature, and in a foreign country I try to be doubly vigilant. Found an international bank ATM while going on a tour. I did everything as per the instructions: I covered the keyboard with my hand when I entered the pin code, and asked my husband to insure - there were a lot of people spinning around.
Everything seemed to go well, the rest was over, and we arrived. Five days later, a message comes in about a write-off of about $ 150 from the account, followed by almost $ 200. All this happens in a matter of seconds, right before my eyes. Of course, I panic, I don't have time to figure anything out!
I call the bank, block the card, come to my senses. I am not in the habit of leaving details on unfamiliar sites, I did not notice any viruses on my phone. The security service said that they made a transfer from my account to another account and a purchase in a store in Thailand.
As a result, I, of course, did not return the money, but I could have lost much more than $ 300. It's good that she quickly reacted and blocked the card. We didn’t have time to siphon off all the money, but it’s a shame to be caught like that”.

Financial Culture Expert:
This case is a classic example of skimming. A person uses an ATM with a specially installed by fraudsters an almost invisible cover with a reader and a false keyboard. The data of his cards, recorded on a magnetic stripe, fall into the hands of malefactors. Then the fraudster can make a duplicate card - and use the information for purchases.

How to avoid becoming a victim of skimming?
  • Use ATM machines located in bank branches. If you are abroad, it is better to choose a well-known international bank in the city center, which reduces the likelihood of fraud, but does not exclude it.
  • Cover the keyboard with your hand. It will not protect the fake buttons, but it will protect you from the webcam, which fraudsters sometimes install at the ATM in order to read the entered PIN code.
  • Pay attention to the appearance of the ATM, card reader, keyboard. Check if the bank has any movable or removable parts - they may be part of the reader. It is best when the ATM has keyboard “wings” - they prevent other devices from being installed. If the ATM has visually distinguishable parts, it is best to use a different one.
  • Do not store large amounts on the card. Get a special card for travel or cash withdrawal: transfer money to it from the main account through the application before going to the ATM.
  • Set a daily withdrawal limit. This can be done either in your bank's mobile application or at the bank's office.
  • Connect SMS notifications and SMS authorization for all operations. So you can control the debits and quickly block the card if necessary.

What if you didn't buy anything, but the money was debited from the card?
Call the bank as soon as possible, report the fraudulent transaction and block the card. After that, leave a statement of disagreement with the operation: having received it, the bank will conduct an internal investigation and decide whether to compensate for the damage. If you followed the security measures and applied no later than a day after the write-off, you can count on a refund. However, if you provided the attackers with the PIN code or the code from the SMS, the money will not be returned. Also contact your local police to stop the scammers.
