For contactless payment, you need to attach the card to the payment terminal. After that, the funds will be immediately debited from the plastic. The whole process takes 3-5 seconds.

This payment method is very convenient. You can also use a phone number instead of a card. To do this, you need to link. Plastic to the payment app on your mobile device.

How to attach a card

Most terminals use contactless payment technology. This is done for the convenience of customers.

The user does not need to insert plastic into the reader and confirm the transfer. Just hold the card up to the terminal and the money will be debited.
How to attach a bank card to a payment device:
  1. Pick up a bank card.
  2. Hold the plastic up to the terminal.
  3. Wait for the signal about successful debiting of funds. It will sound in a second.
  4. Collect the receipt.
Before making a payment, check if there is any money on your balance. If there is not enough money to be debited, the payment will be rejected.

Which devices accept touch payments

Before you attach your card to a contactless payment terminal, make sure that such a device has the specified function. It must be equipped with an NSF chip. This module reads the card and gives a command to withdraw funds.

It is easy to detect the presence of a chip in the terminal. This device has an NFC icon.

A special placemark looks like this:
  • the image has 4 rounded lines;
  • the specified lines go from left to right;
  • The NSF icon is similar to the Wi-Fi symbol, but inverted from left to right;
  • the image shows the hand that applies the card.
Depending on the type of terminal, the picture with contactless payment may be different. For example, the image does not show a hand with a card, but only rounded lines.
The NFC icon is located on the front side of the device. In some models, the placemark is pasted on the home screen.

How far away is the card triggered?

The distance between the card and the payment terminal should not exceed 10 cm. The NFC function will not work at a longer distance. The reader will not be able to physically read the card data. As a result, money will not be debited from plastic.

It is not necessary to attach the bank card closely. This will not affect the speed of debiting funds in any way. The optimal distance is from 1 to 7 cm.

Which side should I attach the card to

At the time of payment, plastic is applied to the front or back side. The NFC module reads the card in any case. But there is a nuance here that concerns security.

Which side should I attach the card to for payment? Only the back one. On the reverse side is the CVC code. When the plastic is applied, it will be hidden from third parties. If someone sees the code along with other data, the card may be compromised.

There are other disadvantages to paying with a front-facing card:
  • There is a risk of damaging the chip on the front side. If you attach the card tightly to the terminal, it may get scratched. Over time, this will lead to failure. We'll have to order new plastic. Even though the card hasn't expired yet.
  • The numbers are erased. When paying by touching the front part, the numbers on the card start to erase after a while. Numbers become harder to identify. This problem is especially relevant when linking a bank card in online apps and buying from online stores. At these sites, you will have to enter the plastic number manually. The camera will not be able to detect data even if a single digit is erased.

What cards can I attach

Contactless payment is not available on all bank cards. This function is only available on plastics with an NFS chip.

How to determine if the card has an NFC chip or not:
  1. Take the plastic and inspect it.
  2. The front part should have a contactless payment icon. These are 4 rounded lines that go from left to right. They are located at the top right.
  3. If there is no such image, then you can't pay contactless. You will have to insert the plastic inside the terminal and enter the PIN code.
If the card does not have an NFC chip, you can order plastic with this function from the bank. To do this, come to the office of this institution and ask for the required plastic. They also order cards in the bank's app or online banking. The bank may charge a fee for reissuing plastic. It is better to find out the cost of such a service in the banking institution itself.

Almost all registered bank cards have an NFC chip. Regardless of the payment system.
This function works on cards:
  • world;
  • Visa application form;
  • Mastercard.
Debit or credit card doesn't matter. Unnamed plastics with free maintenance are usually produced without an NSF chip.

When to enter your PIN code

Enter the password for the card when purchasing from 1000 rubles or more. If the amount is lower, then you don't need to enter the PIN code. The money will be debited immediately after touching the card. Or via NFC from a mobile device linked to plastic in the payment app.

PIN Code Entry Procedure:
  1. After presenting the card, a form for entering the PIN code will appear on the terminal screen.
  2. Use the numbers on the device to enter the password for the card.
  3. Click the green button.
  4. We are waiting for confirmation of the operation. This one will take 1-2 seconds.
If the PIN code was entered correctly, the money will be debited from the card. If the data you entered is incorrect, you will need to re-enter your password. After several unsuccessful attempts, the bank may block the plastic card. This is done for the user's safety in case the card is lost.

On a note! You can increase the limit that does not require entering a PIN code in the bank. But you should not significantly increase this amount. If fraudsters steal plastic, they will quickly empty the account.

Why the payment may not pass – the main errors

There are several reasons:
  • The terminal does not have NFS technology. This device does not accept money with a single tap. You will have to insert the card and enter the PIN code. You can find out about the possibility of contactless purchases from a bank card at the store's checkout.
  • The card account doesn't have enough money to be debited. The only way out is to pay for the product in cash. You can also add funds to your account using the mobile app or at the nearest ATM.
  • The card is demagnetized. This happens when cards are stored in one place and touch each other. You can't use demagnetized plastic. It won't even be accepted by an ATM. You need to go to the bank that issued the card and order a reissue.

Are there any differences between contactless cards issued by different banks

The difference is in the technologies that provide contactless transfer. For example, Visa cards work with Paywave. Mastercard Plastics use PayPass. MIR cards also have their own technology.

Which plastic to choose is up to the customer. MIR cards are relevant for Russian users. They work all over the country.

The positive aspects of contactless payment

This method has several advantages:
  • You don't need to enter a PIN code if the transaction amount doesn't exceed 999 rubles. This is convenient for those who make small transactions. If the terminal is equipped with an NFC chip, then bring the plastic to it, and in a couple of seconds the payment will be made.
  • There is no need to transfer the card to the merchant. Payment is made via the terminal installed at the checkout.
  • The card wears out less. If you constantly insert plastic into the terminal, sooner or later it will fail. If you actively use this payment method, the card will last for 1-2 years. Contactless transfer in this regard protects the plastic from wear and tear. The main thing is to properly store it in your wallet. For example, in a separate closed pocket to avoid demagnetization.
  • Fast payment. Money is debited in a couple of seconds. This saves you a lot of time at the checkout counter.
  • Data security. The card is always in the owner's hands. It is not passed on to third parties. The seller or cashier will not be able to find out and rewrite the plastic data.

Disadvantages of contactless payment

There are also disadvantages when paying with a card with just one touch of the terminal:
  • If you pay more than 1,000 rubles, you must enter a PIN code. This will take extra time. Sometimes you can forget your password altogether.
  • If the card is lost, fraudsters will be able to pay with the money that is on the account. The reason is that purchases under 1000 rubles do not require entering a PIN code. If you perform several such operations, you can spend all the money.
  • There is a possibility of demagnetization of the tape. If a similar situation occurs, you will have to go to the bank and change the plastic.
  • Not all points of sale have NFC-enabled terminals. Especially in provinces and villages.

How to disable contactless card payment

To do this, you need:
  1. log in to the bank's app or online banking under your account;
  2. select a card;
  3. go to settings;
  4. find the item "Prohibit contactless payment" (for example, via PayPass or payWave);
  5. disable this option.
If there is no such feature in the settings, then you can't disable contactless payment. The only way out is to order a reissue of the card without the NSF chip.
