We learned how much money fits into the ATM, how much cash is withdrawn by the townspeople and what to do if your card is stuck
Millions of people around the world use ATMs, without them it is already difficult to imagine city streets, and their absence often causes us discomfort. Konstantin Khotkin, Sales Director of NCR, which supplies ATMs, payment terminals, barcode readers to banks and shops around the world, told about what ATMs are, how much money is in them, which of them can issue a fake and how do not face fraud when using them.
How ATMs work
Essentially, an ATM is a data entry device that operates through a host processor. It is he who allows the cardholder to access the bank's network through an ATM. Most often, host processors are owned by banks or other financial institutions, although there are cases where they are owned by independent service providers.
The most common ATMs work only to dispense money. They usually have one cash dispenser, but sometimes they have two. Such ATMs are installed in places with high traffic in order to reduce the likelihood that all cash will be quickly withdrawn. Two dispensers are also needed to dispense two currencies at once - such functions are popular in places with high business activity and in the city center.
Usually, the money that customers deposit on the card is stored at the ATM until collection. However, in modern devices, the recycling function is increasingly used - the ATM can issue the received money to the next client. From the point of view of logic, such a simple solution is actually quite difficult to implement technically: recycling requires very sophisticated cash verification systems that will minimize the likelihood that the bank will issue a fake to the customer, thrown onto the card by a previous visitor.
Despite the emergence of new functions in ATMs, the most common operation with them, of course, remains cash withdrawal. Now, according to statistics, the average withdrawal amount is about 6 thousand rubles. The average amount of cash deposited varies depending on the bank. As a rule, clients deposit about 15 thousand rubles into their account once a month to repay loans.
Another type of ATM device is account service systems that accept checks, allow money transfers, or top up mobile phone balances.
Interactive ATMs are almost uncommon in Russia, which provide an opportunity to consult with a bank employee via video communication and ask him questions during non-working hours. For example, if you forgot your card, but still want to withdraw money from your account, such systems will help you solve the problem. Many believe that these devices are the future, and all major ATM manufacturers are engaged in innovative developments in this area. For example, the latest version of such a device, presented by NCR, was even nominated for the prestigious German Design award.

How much money is in the ATM and can it be carried away
On average, an ATM can hold up to 8 thousand banknotes of different denominations, which are in four special cassettes. The total amount of funds in a full ATM is about 7-8 million rubles.
The cost of the ATM itself, of course, depends on its type: the most standard ATM that works only for dispensing cash can cost 500-600 thousand rubles, and the cost of more complex ATMs can reach 2 million rubles. Such ATMs not only issue, but also accept banknotes (and some even coins).
Installing ATMs is not easy, since they are equipped with safes and weigh at least 500 kilograms, and sometimes up to a ton. That is why they try to install ATMs on the first floors of the premises. The ATM requires power supply, as well as mobile or wired communication, operating in a protected mode. Since ATMs are often the focus of scammers trying to take away this difficult object, they must be fixed to the floor. This is often not an easy task, especially in premises where landlords use the floor carefully.
ATMs are opened to perform three actions: for loading and unloading money (this is done by the bank), for regularly replacing check paper and cleaning the ATM, as well as for repairs, because, like any other mechanical device, they can fail. In such cases, engineers from special service companies who know the specifics of the ATM device are called in to repair the ATM.
Is it possible to get a fake at an ATM
All funds for ATMs are carefully checked by credit institutions using counting and sorting machines. Further, the money is transferred to collection companies, which are already loading cassettes with banknotes into ATMs. The ATMs themselves also have banknote verification functions, which tend to be very accurate in analysis and rarely fail.
Those banknotes that arouse suspicion fall into a separate compartment, and they are not subject to delivery (if we are talking about ATMs with recycling). ATMs record information about each transaction, which makes it possible to determine which deposit was fraudulent. Together with video surveillance, these mechanisms increase the chances of detecting intruders.
How to avoid problems when using an ATM
All ATM recommendations are simple, but really important to prevent the most common types of fraud. Here are the most basic ones.
It is obviously worth avoiding the use of lonely ATM machines in poorly lit areas. The safest way to use ATMs located in the lobbies of banks: these rooms are always equipped with video surveillance, so attackers prefer less protected and guarded locations.
Make sure that no one is directly behind you at the time of the operation. Often ATMs are equipped with small mirrors precisely so that you can make sure that you are not being spied on, and not so that the client can correct his hair or makeup.
Check if the device itself is suspicious: if there are traces of glue or electrical tape on the surface, if any elements are loosened. This may be a sign that the attackers tried to install skimmers (devices made to match the color of the ATM; they read cards when they are accepted, remove the PIN using a keyboard pad or a camera installed nearby, which allows an attacker to make duplicate cards). Cover the keyboard with your hand or wallet when entering your PIN.
If your card is stuck in an ATM without leaving it, immediately call your bank (fix its number in your mobile phone, because your card with the phone number indicated on it is no longer available). Block the card, and then you can already call the support phone number indicated on the ATM. Beware of such advice from people nearby as “let me help you” or “and you go over there, they will tell you what to do” - often this is an attempt by scammers to distract you and get access to your card, the PIN code to which you already introduced.
Do not leave the ATM if the ATM is delaying cash dispensing - sometimes the process takes a long time. If the ATM still does not issue money without leaving the ATM, immediately call your bank, and then you can already call the support phone number indicated on the ATM.
In the event of any malfunctions, before leaving the location, call your bank and the support telephone number, which should be indicated on the front of the ATM.
