The second EU Payment Services Directive (PSD2) will enter into force on 1 January 2021. This directive will also affect payments made through the Neste app. The impact on users of the Neste app will vary depending on the payment card used to make the purchase.
Specifically, PSD2 will affect purchases made with bank debit and / or credit cards. This directive will not affect payments made using a Neste card within the Neste app
For more information on the impact of PSD2 on the Neste app and payments, see below.

What is PSD2?
PSD2 is a European Union-wide Payment Services Directive that aims to make online and mobile payments safer for consumers in addition to preventing misuse. This directive will make strong client authentication mandatory for all online payments within the EU.

What is Strong Client Authentication?
The purpose of strong customer authentication is to ensure and verify that the customer making the payment is the actual owner of the payment instrument. In Finland, strong authentication of cardholders is usually done through identification data provided by banks. Electronic payment transactions include, for example, online banking money transfers, card terminal transactions, remote payments, and online store payments (mobile payments).

How will PSD2 affect mobile payments made with the Neste app?
The extent to which PSD2 affects users of the Neste app depends on the card used to purchase. In practice, strong customer authentication will increasingly be required when a bank card or credit card is used as a means of payment within the Neste app.
Strong customer authentication will mainly be required in the case of purchases over € 30 made with a bank card or credit card.
Strong customer authentication will not be required for purchases under € 30 (low purchase value exemption). This condition will be determined by the bank, but not by the Neste app. Strong customer authentication will also be required for small purchases, when the current purchase is the sixth consecutive purchase made without authentication, or if the sum of consecutive purchases made without authentication reaches € 100.
The Neste app will guide the user through the strong authentication process for the user's bank before customers can start transferring funds. Follow the instructions provided to you by the app. In addition to strong customer authentication, you will either need to enter your Neste PIN or use biometric identification (face or fingerprint identification). Neste app PIN or biometric identification alone will not be enough to authenticate these payments.

I have an individual's Neste card. Will my payments change?
PSD2 will not necessitate any changes for individual Neste cardholders. The Neste app PIN or biometric identification (face or fingerprint) will still be sufficient authentication in connection with payment transactions.

What happens if the translation costs are less than € 30?
Strong customer authentication will not be required for purchases of less than € 30 (low purchase value exemption). This condition will be ultimately determined by the bank and not by the Neste app. However, strong customer authentication will be required in the case of small payments after making five consecutive payments without authentication, or when the total amount of consecutive payments without authentication reaches 100 euros.

Will PSD2 Affect Neste App Registration?
The new Payment Services Directive will only affect payments. The registration and login processes will remain unchanged.

What can I do to make in-app payments easier after the PSD2 directive comes into force?
Make sure you have installed your bank authentication app on your mobile phone or mobile device (for example, OP mobile key or Nordea Codes app). This will speed up the strong client authentication process on your mobile device. Additionally, follow your bank's instructions to confirm online payments as these procedures may vary from bank to bank.
In the Neste app, using fingerprint or face identification to confirm payments will speed up the transaction because in this case, the Neste app PIN is not required. Check and make sure your device supports biometric identification (face or fingerprint identification) and enable this feature in the Neste app settings under Profile → Security.
Make sure you have installed the latest version of the Neste app. The latest version of the app includes all the latest updates, making it easier and more convenient for you to use the app.
