In many cases, our collective values are influenced by the existing social structure or subculture within society. For better or worse, social systems generally tend to perpetuate themselves, their advantages and disadvantages. In the current era of mass communication, media regulators and official public institutions influence the national “agenda”, which, in turn, mainly determines our behavior, expectations and values.

Whether citizens realize it or not, most of us are constantly governed through the media. If you doubt this, compare an international news broadcast on a state television channel with one broadcast by a local television station. It may seem that the broadcasts are carried out from different planets, and they should be taken with great skepticism.

Our deepest aspirations are influenced by books, movies, television, religions, role models and the environment in which we live. Even the concepts of good and evil, the concept of ethics are part of our cultural heritage. This method of control does not use physical force and has been so successful that we no longer feel manipulated or acknowledge its existence.

The dominant values of any social system rarely come from people. Rather, they represent the views of our prevailing ruling group, such as the church, the military, banks, corporations, power elites, or any combination of the aforementioned organizations. These enterprises set the public agenda, regulate courts, taxes, etc., all serving their own interests, perpetuating the illusion that the values of society were formed from scratch. Governments either suppress or justify any deviation that threatens them. Fear of the retribution of gods and demons is still effective in managing an ignorant and superstitious population in both developed and underdeveloped countries.

Many do believe that demons are responsible for antisocial behavior and that they can be exorcised by rituals and spells. Accordingly, they are unable to assess the impact of the environment and events on their behavior. Many still believe that volcanic eruptions, thunder and lightning and other cataclysms are manifestations of the wrath of gods or demons, and that inanimate objects have their own will and act according to their own understanding.
