Today we will tell you what kind of "beast" such an ATM is, about the principles of its operation and how much money it can hold. We will also give advice on how not to fall into the hands of scammers.
How ATMs work
Technically, an ATM is an input device that operates with a host processor. Through it, customers can connect to the bank's network. As a rule, the host processors are owned directly by banks or other financial institutions. Although there are times when they belong to outside companies.
Most ATMs perform one operation - dispensing cash. Usually they are equipped with one money dispenser, although sometimes they bet two at once. This is done in places with a large flow of people to reduce the likelihood of a quick withdrawal of all funds. In addition, two dispensers are required to dispense money in different currencies. This option is extremely useful in the central part of the city and in areas of high business activity.
Previously, all the funds that customers deposited on the card were stored in the ATM until collection. Nowadays, more and more devices are equipped with a recycling function, thanks to which the device can issue the received funds to the next client. At first glance, this solution seems simple, but for its implementation it is necessary to install ultra-precise money verification systems that minimize the likelihood of a user receiving counterfeit banknotes that were placed on the card by a previous client.
Although modern ATMs are equipped with many new options, cash withdrawals remain the most popular operation. According to statistics, Ukrainians take off UAH 2,000 on average. The average amount of funds deposited depends on the limits of the banks. Usually clients put about UAH 5,000 on the card. per month.
Another type of ATM is an account management system that accepts checks and allows money transfers or mobile top-ups.
So far, interactive ATMs are rare in Ukraine. They allow through video communication to consult with a bank employee after the end of the working day. For example, such a system will be useful if you do not have a card with you, but you really need to get money. Experts believe that this type of ATM will become the most common in the future. All influential ATM manufacturers are trying to present their developments in this industry. For example, NCR recently unveiled an ATM that received a nomination for the prestigious German Design award.
How much money can an ATM fit
As a rule, an ATM is designed for 8 thousand banknotes of various denominations. They are housed in four special wards. In total, several million hryvnias can be deposited in a full ATM, but Ukrainian banks usually fill them with an amount of about 500 thousand hryvnias.
The cost of an ATM depends on its type and functionality. An ordinary ATM, which only dispenses cash, will cost UAH 200-300 thousand. A more functional ATM costs about UAH 1 million. Such devices are capable of not only issuing but also accepting money.
Installing an ATM is not the easiest thing to do, since it is equipped with a safe and weighs at least 500 kg. Unsurprisingly, ATM machines are usually located on the ground floor. To run an ATM, you need access to the power grid and a secure mobile or wired connection. Due to the fact that thieves often try to pull this heavy device out of the premises, it must be attached to the floor. It is also a challenging task, especially when the landlord is gentle on the floor.
ATMs are opened in three cases: to replenish the stock of money (the operation is carried out by banks), to replace the receipt paper and clean the device, as well as for maintenance and repair. If the ATM breaks down, banks order engineers from special repair services who know the peculiarities of the internal structure of the ATM.
Can an ATM dispense a counterfeit bill
All the money that gets into the ATM is carefully checked by credit institutions using counting and sorting machines. Then the funds fall into the hands of collectors, who place cassettes with banknotes in the ATM. ATM machines also have a money verification function. In the process of checking banknotes, machines do not actually make mistakes.
If the bills are in doubt, then they fall into a special compartment and are not used for dispensing. The ATM saves data about each action, so you can accurately record which transaction was fraudulent. Together with video surveillance, this control system allows you to quickly identify criminals.
How not to fall into the trap of scammers
Of course, you shouldn't use ATM machines that are located in low-light locations. It is better to choose an ATM located directly at the bank branch. In such premises, video surveillance is constantly conducted and fraudsters in such conditions will not want to risk it.
Make sure that no one is watching your actions while working with the ATM. Sometimes ATM machines are equipped with small mirrors that help you keep track of what is happening behind your back.
It is also worth carefully examining the device itself. Make sure the ATM has not been damaged and that there are no traces of tape or glue on the surface. Otherwise, there is a possibility that the scammers have installed skimmers. This is the name given to devices that read the card data while placing it in the ATM, or fix the PIN-code using a pad on the keyboard or a camera installed near the ATM. After that, nothing prevents fraudsters from making a copy of the card. When you enter your PIN, it is best to cover the keyboard.
If the ATM did not give the card back, call your bank on the spot. First you need to block the card, and then talk to the support service, whose phone number you can find at the ATM. Don't trust the advice of people who offer help or send you somewhere for advice. Sometimes hackers act this way, wishing to use a card, the PIN code of which you managed to enter.
If the ATM does not dispense money for too long, do not leave, because sometimes this process takes longer than it should be. If you are still unable to receive cash, call the bank and then contact support. If you find that the ATM is not working correctly, you should also first notify your bank and support service, and only then leave.
