Hotel staff searches hackers rooms – what do they want to find?

In Las Vegas, security measures were strengthened in one of the hotels where participants of the DEF CON hacker conference were accommodated. As it became known from internal documents of the security service, hotel employees were instructed to search the rooms in search of hacker tools.

Resorts World Hotel, which hosts DEF CON participants, has stepped up room checks amid the recent ransomware attacks that occurred at MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment. The hotel management instructed staff and security to conduct daily checks of all rooms booked through DEF CON, which is about 1,000 rooms at the peak of the conference. The documents reviewed by 404 Media journalists provide detailed instructions for identifying dangerous items that may pose a security risk.

The list of "Hacking Tools" lists things that are widely distributed among DEF CON participants and in hacker circles in general, among others:
  • Flipper Zero is a multifunctional gadget that can, among other things, display unpleasant pop-up notifications on Apple devices via Bluetooth;
  • WiFi Pineapple — a device the size of a router that can be used to create fake Wi-Fi networks and intercept user traffic;
  • lock picks and soldering kits.

The hotel security service and IT specialists have created a special chat in Microsoft Teams to quickly exchange information about suspicious activities. The documents also recommend that staff activate airplane mode on their devices to disable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile connectivity. This should minimize the risk of compromising employees ' devices.

The press service of Resorts World refrained from commenting on these searches, but earlier representatives of the hotel stated that checks are standard practice in leading hotels in Las Vegas, especially during periods of increased risk. The measures are aimed at strengthening both physical and cyber security, protecting the hotel's infrastructure and ensuring the safety of guests, business partners and employees. The statement also emphasizes that inspections are conducted with respect for the privacy and convenience of guests, following strict protocols to minimize inconvenience.
