The schedules of the planned hearings have been violated, new dates are still unknown.
The Washington State Administrative Office of Courts (AOC) reported the detection of "unauthorized activity" in the network of judicial institutions, which led to temporary disruptions in the courts of King, Pierce, Lewis, Wotcom counties, as well as a number of city courts.
AOC representatives assured that all necessary measures are being taken to protect the systems and restore their operability. However, so far, access to the public website and systems remains unstable.
Despite the lack of official confirmation that this is an extortion attack, the AOC website has remained inaccessible for several days. The AOC declined to comment, only noting that at the moment there is no reason to believe that this is a targeted attack.
Some courts, such as the Pierce County Supreme Court, have said their work has suffered minimally. However, in a number of other institutions, there were serious failures in the electronic document management and telephony systems, which made it difficult to pay fines. The Thurston County Court announced the postponement of hearings in tort cases. New meeting dates will be sent to participants.
The incident comes just days after a similar cyberattack in California, where attackers paralyzed the digital services of the San Joaquin County Court. Over the past year, courts in Pennsylvania, Florida, Texas and other states have also been attacked, leading to data breaches and extortion.
The state of Washington has already faced repeated cyberattacks in 2024, including on a large school district, the transportation department, and the Seattle airport.
