An attack on one company can have a detrimental effect on the entire energy industry.
Australian company Energy One Limited (EOL), one of the largest suppliers of software products in the energy sector, reported a cyber attack on its infrastructure, which affected some corporate systems in Australia and the UK.
EOL immediately took steps to mitigate the impact of the incident and disabled communication between corporate and client systems to ensure data security.
The company has launched an investigation and engaged third-party cybersecurity specialists, but has not yet disclosed the details of the attack. "Energy One's top priorities are the safety of its employees, customers, and systems," EOL said.
Energy One Limited serves customers all over the world, including energy distribution, generating and trading companies, ranging from startups to multinational organizations.
Chairman of the Board of Directors Andrew Bonwick said that this is a particularly busy period in the company's life. Comments about who is behind the attack and what data was affected are not provided yet.
EOL works to ensure the security of its systems and finds out if customers ' personal data is affected. The company has already informed the Australian Cybersecurity center and British authorities.
In recent years, the number of attacks on the Australian energy sector has increased dramatically. According to last year's report by the Australian Cyber Security Center (ACSC), the electricity, gas and water sector ranked in the Top 10 sectors for the number of cyber attacks in the country.
"The threat to Australia's critical infrastructure is real," the report says, " and even minor attacks can have serious consequences."
EnergyAustralia, AGL and other local companies have already been subjected to hacker attacks, so the problem of cybersecurity in the industry is acute.
