British authorities are investigating the hacking of the computer systems of the country's Foreign Ministry, as a result of which unknown attackers stole hundreds of classified documents related to the British propaganda programs in Syria.
According to the Middle East Eye, we are talking about documents on the financial and operational relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Commonwealth Affairs with private contractors, hidden by the managers of the network of media platforms in Syria.
The leak came to light last week after Anonymous activists published a series of publicly available documents describing contractors' actions under the propaganda program, including the launch of radio stations, English and Arabic-language magazines, newspapers and other printed materials to support the country's opposition ...
It is currently unknown what kind of group is behind the hack, but based on the complexity of the attack, the British authorities suspect the involvement of state-sponsored hackers, in particular from the Russian Federation.
As noted by the Middle East Eye, the ministry is concerned not so much with the content of the leaked documents (the existence of the program has been known for several years), but with the ease with which hackers infiltrated computer systems. The department itself refused to comment on the incident.
