Hackers hacked into the external email system of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Bloomberg informs about it with reference to the statement of the department.

The attackers sent out tens of thousands of emails on behalf of the FBI warning of a possible cyberattack.

According to the British organization Spamhaus, after the hack, fake emails came from the FBI's real email address at @ ic.fbi.gov.

Austin Berglas, head of cybersecurity company BlueVoyant, told Bloomberg that the FBI has several email systems. According to him, the one that was hacked is publicly available. It can be used by FBI agents and employees for electronic correspondence with citizens. The specialist noted that agents use a separate e-mail system to transfer classified information.

The FBI said they knew about what happened, but as the situation develops, they did not give additional comments. The department urged the public to report such incidents.
