The investigation is underway, and citizens are waiting for the systems to be restored.

The American city of Cleveland, Ohio, this week faced a cyberattack that forced the shutdown of a number of important public services, including government offices and institutions in the Erieview * complex and City Hall.

Cleveland, with a population of about 380,000, is part of the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area, home to more than 2 million people. The region is a major hub for healthcare, industry, finance, logistics, education, and technology, as well as the most important economic center in Ohio.

On June 10, the city authorities said that the investigation of the cyberattack is being conducted with the participation of third-party experts, and the provision of public services is limited to the most necessary ones. The City Hall and Erieview complex are closed to all but essential personnel, and affected systems are disabled to protect and restore them.

Local media reported that the mayor of the city, Justin Bibb, called the incident "hacking", while the head of the IT department, Kim Roy Wilson, said that suspicious activity was recorded in the city's computer network.

During the investigation at the moment, it was established that the attackers failed to gain access to taxpayer data stored in the city administration, as well as to user information available to public utilities. It is also noted that the cyber incident did not affect the work of emergency services (911, police, fire protection), utilities, health services (ambulance) and airports (Cleveland Hopkins and Burke Lakefront).

At the time of writing, none of the hacker groups claimed responsibility for the attack on Cleveland, and the exact causes of the incident remain unknown.

According to Wilson, disclosure of details of the incident at this stage may interfere with the investigation, so the details are not disclosed yet.
