Cybercriminals profit from other people's misfortune by publishing 550 GB of the most cherished data to the network.
The publisher of the popular homeless magazine The Big Issue has fallen victim to a cyberattack by the Qilin group. As a result of the attack, about 550 GB of the company's data was stolen, which can cause significant damage to its operations and reputation. This was reported to The Record by a company representative.
The published leak contains personal data of managers and employees, including:
Big Issue reported that they have no evidence indicating that the data of journal subscribers was compromised.
The Big Issue is a social enterprise that helps people without a fixed place of residence or in a difficult life situation earn a living and return to a full-fledged social life. Since its founding in 1991, the magazine has been distributed on four continents and is considered one of the leaders in social entrepreneurship in the UK.
After the incident was discovered, prompt measures were taken to restrict access to the systems with the help of external cybersecurity experts, and an investigation was launched. The company has already started restoring its systems and continues to work with minimal disruption. It is noted that the distribution of The Big Issue magazine was not affected by the incident.
The company is actively cooperating with the National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) and the police, and has notified the relevant regulators. Experts emphasize that the purpose of the attack is probably ransom, and point out the morally unacceptable nature of the attack on a social enterprise engaged in supporting the most vulnerable segments of the population.
Group-IB specialists were introduced to the Qilin group in March 2023 and published a report in which they described the internal structure and economic model of the group.
