The new vulnerability allows you to create detailed indoor maps via smartphones.
A recent study revealed a disturbing trend: smartphones can be used to secretly monitor users, while creating highly accurate maps of their homes. The use of GPS data in various applications allows you to receive partially processed information without the knowledge of device owners. These data contribute to determining the environment with an amazing accuracy of 99.6%, as well as tracking human activity in a variety of conditions with an accuracy of 87%. The information obtained can be used to create detailed indoor plans with minimal error.
At the moment, the vulnerability affects about 90% of Android users. Researchers fear that such data may already be used by intelligence agencies, such as the US National Security Agency (NSA), to track and analyze user activity.
Although the study was conducted only on Android devices, experts believe that other smartphones that give apps access to GPS data may also be vulnerable. Thus, this also affects iPhone users. The only way to fully protect yourself, according to experts, is to refuse to use smartphones.
The study covered an extensive period, including data collection in various geographical locations, including high-altitude areas and even cruise ships. Based on the data obtained, it is possible to determine with high accuracy such elements of the internal layout as elevators, stairs, corridors and rooms, which confirms the severity of the threat to user privacy.
