Android starts analyzing private messages.
Google has just unveiled a revolutionary artificial intelligence update for Android. But it also has a dark side. The upcoming update will allow Google's AI to analyze and read users ' private messages, returning to the very first ones.
With the introduction of a new feature called Bard, Android users will get an AI assistant that promises to facilitate communication and encourage creativity. Bard analyzes the content of messages to understand the context of the conversation, the emotional mood and interests of the user, and also adapts its responses to the mood of the interlocutor and the general tone of the conversation. In addition, Bard takes into account the history of correspondence with different contacts to personalize responses.
This update ushers in a new era of privacy struggles in the smartphone world, where questions about app rights, tracking transparency, and the scandals associated with listening to AI voice assistants are still relevant. Google will have to convince users that using the new technology will not cause privacy issues similar to previous incidents.
At the same time, requests to Bard via Messages will be sent to the cloud, where they can be used for AI training and, possibly, will be available to humans, albeit in an anonymous form. This data will be stored for 18 months, and even after disabling AI, it can be saved for several days, although it is possible to delete it.
The issue of confidentiality arises in relation to the analysis of the content of messages, which are now protected by end-to-end encryption. It is assumed that the analysis should be performed directly on the user's device, and not in the cloud.
Apple, as a historical competitor to Google, is traditionally stronger at analyzing data on the device. The company is also expected to introduce generative AI technologies into its iPhones, focusing on analyzing data directly on the device.
Bard assures that all analyses will take place on the user's device, and data will not be sent to servers. However, there are concerns about potential data leaks, misuse, or hidden data sharing.
Importantly, the integration of generative AI and messaging will change text platforms forever and increase competition between Google, Apple, and Meta.
The launch date of Bard in Google Messages has not yet been determined, but it is expected that it will happen in 2024. However, this feature is currently in beta testing and may change before the official release.
Users are encouraged to think carefully about their decision to use message analysis, weighing the potential benefits and concerns for their privacy.
Bard emphasizes that it is important to demand clarity, control, and responsible AI development from the companies we trust with our data.
