How does site marketing and content affect search results?

German scientists have concluded that the quality of search engine results is deteriorating due to the flooding of the Internet with low-quality content from SEO farms and sites with affiliate links. The study analyzed 7,392 requests for product reviews in Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo.

Experts have found that pages that occupy high positions in search results are more often optimized for SEO, contain affiliate links, and contain low-quality text. Most search engine results use affiliate marketing, which reduces the quality of pages in the search results.

It was also found that all three search engines are susceptible to manipulation through massive spam campaigns with affiliate links. Attempts to combat such manipulations by updating algorithms bring only a temporary positive effect. According to the study, Google is most effective in fighting SEO and spam with affiliate links.

Of particular concern is the emergence of generative artificial intelligence, which can instantly create a large amount of low-quality content. The researchers note a general decline in the quality of texts in all three search engines and a blurring of the boundaries between useful content and spam.

The authors note that search engines should select pages more carefully, especially if they produce a large amount of content. The researchers also pointed out that many reputable sites use affiliate marketing and SEO optimization as an important source of revenue, but a complete ban on these methods is unlikely to be the solution.

After the study was published, a Google spokesperson said that it does not reflect the overall quality and usefulness of Google for billions of queries every day. According to him, Google has implemented improvements to solve the described problems, and the study itself indicates an improvement in Google's performance compared to last year and other search engines.
