With the development of affordable high-speed Internet, online games have become especially popular, in which many gamers spend quite a lot of money on pumping their heroes, tanks, buying game currency, etc. We have analyzed in which markets one or another payment method for online games prevails.

The fact that people began to spend a lot on online games is evidenced by the statistics of the Wargaming.net company, which released one of the most popular online games - World of Tanks. So in 2020, she earned 218 million euros, of which € 6.1 million is net profit.

It is worth noting that at the beginning of this year, the largest battle in the history of the online game EVE Online took place, during which ships in the amount of $ 200,000 were destroyed.

According to a study by WorldPlay, all over the world, users are increasingly turning to alternative payment methods when paying for video games, that is, credit and debit cards are fading into the background.

Alternative payment methods include e-wallets, accumulative points, direct debit transfers, mobile payments, and more.

In a survey of 7,554 gamers worldwide who paid for online games, the study found that 51% used alternative payment methods and 49% used credit and debit cards.

According to experts, the choice of a payment method is driven by the desire of users to make convenient and secure payments. Thus, 72% of respondents want to save payment information for faster subsequent purchases. Moreover, 80% of respondents use the same payment method for all types of purchases.

In 2021, massively multiplayer online games grossed $ 14.9 billion, accounting for 21% of all global gaming revenues. At the same time, the Asia-Pacific region, which is currently the largest gaming market, generates 36% of gaming revenues worldwide.

Experts expect that by 2025 the turnover of the gaming market in Brazil will reach $ 2.6 billion due to such giants as League of Legends, World of Tanks, Fifa 2014 and others.

“Payment methods are changing very quickly and while credit and debit cards are still used by consumers today, we are seeing more and more gamers looking for alternative payment methods,” said Colin Murray, Vice President, WorldPlay Games.

Speaking about alternative methods of paying for online games, do not forget about the virtual currency Bitcoin. So in early 2021, the American developer of online games Zynga began testing Bitcoin payments in seven of its online games, including CastleVille, ChefVille, CoasterVille, CityVille, FarmVille 2, Hidden Chronicles and Hidden Shadows. Prior to that, Zynga offered its users to pay in games using credit cards and PayPal, as well as the internal currency of Facebook.

In March this year, Xsolla, an international payment service provider, partnered with Icelandic independent multiplayer games developer CCP Games to expand online gaming payment options.

Among the main trends in the Russian market, it is worth noting an increase in the share of bank cards (from 9% in 2020 to 21% in 2021), which occurred due to a decrease in the share of electronic money (from 32% in 2020 to 26% in 2021). The share of mobile payments in 2021 was at the level of 6%, although in 2020 it was 9%.
