Less than a year of malicious activity can turn into a long-term prison term.

The Ukrainian cyber police in the Dnipropetrovsk region detained a hacker who sold the databases of thousands of users. A 25-year-old resident of the city of Kamianske hacked about 10 thousand electronic mailboxes to steal and sell personal and financial data. At the moment, the suspect is in custody and is awaiting a court decision.

Since the beginning of 2024, the hacker has used malicious SQL injections to hack dozens of servers of various web resources, including dating sites. After receiving lists of e-mails, he guessed passwords using special software obtained via the Internet. Thus, the accounts of users from different countries were compromised.

The attacker logged into accounts that were not protected by two-factor authentication and gained access to victims' crypto wallets, appropriating their assets. He sold the compromised data on the darknet.

Law enforcement officers found about 10 accounts of the suspect on various hacker forums. Earlier, searches were carried out at the place of residence of the hacker and in his car, computer equipment and mobile phones were seized.

The man was charged under articles related to unauthorized interference in the operation of information systems and the dissemination of confidential data.

The suspect faces up to 15 years in prison with the possibility of restricting the right to hold certain positions for up to three years. At the moment, the investigation continues: the exact scale of the damage and the number of victims are being established.
