Germany summoned the Chinese ambassador because of a cyberattack on a mapping agency.
Germany has officially blamed Chinese hackers for a cyberattack on the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG), which occurred in 2021. This was announced on July 31, when the German authorities summoned the Chinese ambassador to discuss the incident.
According to the German security services, the target of the attack was espionage. BKG performs important functions for many public and private institutions, including working with critical infrastructure, providing up-to-date geodata, and supporting the development of infrastructure geodata. It is noted that hackers began their penetration by hacking the devices of individuals and companies.
As a result of the investigation, it became known that a Chinese hacker group, whose name was not disclosed, used the devices of individuals and companies to carry out the attack. After the incident, BKG took a set of measures and improved the level of information security.
The German Interior Ministry called the attack a threat to the country's sovereignty and called on China to stop such actions. However, German security services expect increased activity of Chinese hackers in attempts to obtain information for the industrial development of China.
The agency assumes that cyber operations will continue at a high technical level and with a huge expenditure of resources. Despite the fact that traces of hacking were found in the BKG network, no malware was found in other agency systems. The networks were rebuilt, and German authorities are confident that the attackers were unable to maintain access.
