The fate of the 18-year-old "brain" of the hacker group Lapsus$ is in the hands of the jury.

A London court found that 18-year-old Arion Kurtay is one of the leaders of the hacker group Lapsus$, which specialized in data extortion. Kurtay, originally from Oxford, England, was arrested twice in 2022 and is linked to a number of cybercrimes committed by the group.

Kurtai is accused of hacking the fintech company Revolut, Uber aggregator and game developer Rockstar Games. Arion Kurtay suffers from autism and was found unable to attend the trial. However, the jury had to determine whether he was responsible for the alleged cybercrimes.

After his arrest, Kurtay allegedly hacked into the cloud storage of the City of London Police, and then, with the help of other Lapsus$ members, attacked Revolut, Uber and Rockstar Games, demanding millions of US dollars.

Under the pseudonym "teapotuberhacker", while under house arrest in a hotel, Kurtai published gameplay from the unreleased game Grand Theft Auto 6. It is believed that Kurtai used more than 12 nicknames and earned more than 300 BTC from hacking activities, including SIM-Swapping. Kurtay lost most of the money he earned in gambling or lost it due to hacking his computer.

Kurtay isn't the only teenager facing trial for Lapsus$ - related activities. Another 17-year-old member of the group, whose name was not disclosed, also suffers from autism, has already been convicted .

According to a US government report, members of the group used low-cost methods to identify weaknesses in the infrastructure of the US authorities. Lapsus$ paid up to $20,000 a week for access to the telecommunications provider's platform, which allowed hackers to intercept phone numbers and get one-time passwords to various accounts. Lapsus$ 's activity declined markedly in September last year after mass arrests of band members began in the UK and Brazil.

Recently, the US Department of Homeland Security published a report analyzing the attacks of the hacker group Lapsus$ . Attackers hacked dozens of organizations with reliable security, using fairly simple methods like SIM Swapping. Lapsus$ is described as a poorly organized group of teenagers from the UK and Brazil. They operated in 2021-2022 for fame, money, or entertainment, using simple but sometimes creative hacking techniques.
