Be careful with programs downloaded for free.

In the world of cybersecurity, threats are constantly evolving, and attackers are finding new ways to attack users. One of the latest threats is the AsyncRAT variant, which is being actively distributed by masquerading as cracked software. Users who want to access paid programs for free fall victim to this Trojan, unaware that there is dangerous malware behind the seemingly harmless program.

According to a report by McAfee, this threat has been circulating since March 2024 and has affected numerous devices worldwide. AsyncRAT is used by attackers to remotely control infected computers, steal confidential information, and gain full control over the device.

One of the popular methods of spreading malware was masquerading as well-known programs such as CCleaner, Sidify Music Converter, EaseUS Partition Master, and YouTube Downloader. However, the most notable is the case of the fake version of AnyDesk. The malware uses a genuine AnyDesk file to create the appearance of a legitimate application running, while the main attack takes place covertly.

After a user runs a fake installation file, a number of hidden operations occur: malicious code changes system settings, throws exceptions for Windows Defender, and runs PowerShell to execute hidden commands. During the attack, various files are replaced and executed, which allows the malware to gain a foothold in the system and continue its activities without being noticed.

AsyncRAT uses sophisticated code obfuscation techniques, which makes it difficult to analyze. The malware applies encryption and data compression and then downloads additional components to expand its capabilities. These features include anti-debugging, covert data transfer, and persistent connectivity to a C&C server located on the orostros.mywire.org domain.

The growing popularity of AsyncRAT and its distribution through pirated programs highlight the ever-changing tactics of cybercriminals. Using tempting offers of "free" software, attackers gain unauthorized access to thousands of computers around the world.

To protect your data and devices from such threats, it's important to use reputable antivirus solutions and avoid downloading dubious software.
