Security researchers at Trustwave have released a new open source tool that uses facial recognition technology to track targets across multiple social networks.

Called Social Mapper, the tool automatically searches for people on eight platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, VKontakte, Weibo, and Douban, based on their names and images.

“Performing online data collection is a laborious process, it usually begins with an attempt to find a person on various social networking sites,” the experts explained.

Social Mapper works in three stages:

Step 1. The tool creates a list of targets (consisting of a name and an image) based on the entered data. The list can be provided through links in a CSV file, images in a folder, or through people on LinkedIn.

Stage 2. After the goals are processed, Social Mapper automatically starts searching for people on social networks.

Step 3: After finishing the search, Social Mapper generates reports, such as spreadsheets with links to profile pages from the targeted list, or a more rendered HTML report that also includes photos.

According to the creators of the tool, they understand that their development can be used by hackers, but still decided to make Social Mapper free and free to download.
