Criminals controlled the victims computers through remote access programs.
As a result of a joint operation of the law enforcement agencies of Romania and Moldova, a large international criminal group specializing in financial fraud on the Internet was uncovered. The criminals deceived more than 150 people in the amount of about 15 million lei (approximately 750,000 euros).
The investigation began in 2022 after a statement from the Romanian Financial Supervisory Authority. 120 criminal cases from other prosecutor's offices were added to the case based on the victims statements.
The fraud scheme was carefully thought out. Criminals placed ads on the Internet that promised fast and significant income from small investments in stocks and cryptocurrencies. Photos of famous personalities and logos of banks and economic publications were used for convincing purposes.
When the victim clicked on the link, a fake investment platform was opened. After registration, the person was contacted by members of the group who presented themselves as financial consultants or brokers. They persuaded me to transfer money, promising a guaranteed profit.
To create the appearance of legality of operations, fraudsters requested copies of documents and bank cards from victims. They were then persuaded to install remote access programs, ostensibly for investment management. In fact, the criminals gained control of the victims computers and smartphones, as well as access to their bank accounts and crypto wallets.
During the operation on August 7, 2024, more than 60 searches were conducted in Moldova. Computers, weapons, money and other evidence were seized. 10 cars were arrested. 12 suspects were detained. The investigation continues.
