In total, Russians lost about 150 billion rubles in 2021 due to the actions of telephone and Internet scammers. This figure is given by researchers from the company BrandMonitor, who also clarified that 66 billion fell on the income of pseudo-Bank employees.
When assessing fraud losses, BrandMonitor employees used VTsIOM data as a basis. Conversations with fake medical workers, who managed to receive more than 50 thousand rubles per person, were the most expensive for citizens.
As we noted above, 66 billion rubles were lured away from Russians by malefactors posing as employees of financial organizations. In these schemes, the victim was tricked into withdrawing money through ATMs.
A little less - 46.5 billion rubles - fell to scammers offering medical services, and 18.6 billion rubles were received by owners of phishing sites and fake online stores.
If the "health workers" managed to cheat one person out of more than 50,000 rubles, then fake Bank employees showed more modest results - an average of 27 thousand rubles, and through ATMs this amount was even less - 15 thousand rubles.
Cybersecurity experts believe that the figures provided by BrandMonitor do not reflect the full picture. For example, Sergey Golovanov from Kaspersky, whose words are quoted by Kommersant, is sure that we can talk about tens of billions of rubles of financial losses for citizens. The fact is that not every victim reports the incident to law enforcement.
