Over the past four years, I have sent over a hundred thousand cold emails (not spam, but personal targeted emails) and have used dozens of email search tools. In this article I want to share information on how they work.

I will not talk about the obvious ways to find contacts. Consider a situation when you have already checked the site, looked at the profiles in social networks, but found nothing relevant.

Email search services

The basic way to find mail is to use special email address lookup services.
You just need to enter the name and site of the person you want. There are hundreds of tools on the market that differ in quality, data type and search depth.
Every month we search for about 80-100 thousand contacts and pay $ 10 thousand for data search and verification. So every year I do my own research on the quality of the tools. It is important for me that my data retrieval department uses cutting edge technology, with good contact rates and value for money.

List of the most popular test solutions:
  • Find That Email : free - 50 contacts per month, the paid package starts at $ 29 for 500 contacts.
  • Clearbit Connect : API integration, package starts at $ 99.
  • Finder Expert : Free - 300 contacts per month, paid package - from $ 39 for 2500 contacts.
  • Snov.io : free - 50 contacts per month, paid package - from $ 29 for 1000 contacts.
  • Voila Norbert : free - 50 contacts per month, paid - from $ 49 for 1000 contacts.
  • Hunter : free - 50 contacts per month, paid - from $ 49 for 1000 contacts.
  • FindThatLead : free - 50 contacts per month, paid - from $ 49 for 5000 contacts
  • eMail-Prospector Pro from eGrabber: trial period - 50 contacts per week, paid package from $ 3450 for 35 thousand contacts per year.
  • FindEmails.com (former Toofr): - 50 contacts per month, paid - from $ 19 for 500 contacts.
  • Hiretool : information on request.
  • Lusha : free - five contacts per month, paid - from $ 75 for 120 contacts.

The list is topped by Hunter, Lusha, Hiretool and Find That Email. eMail-Prospector Pro follows them with a score of 75%. This tool is the most expensive among the tested. It is a PC software with an interface from the 1990s, which is still a pleasure. Finding 100 addresses took him about half an hour, in general, I do not recommend.
Voila Norbert and FindThatLead performed well with 74% and 72% results.
Address lookup services are a good solution, but not ideal.
For example, there are often situations when the site domain and email domain are different. In this case, the services described above will not help you.
And that's why:
  • At least 10% of leads won't have email. (Even the best tools couldn't offer anything in every tenth case.)
  • Free packages have a very limited number of requests, and paid subscriptions can get expensive.
If you need a free but effective way to find addresses - read on.

Manual mail selection

Most companies have the same email address patterns.
If you know the first name, last name, and email domain of the person you are looking for, you can simply pick their email address.
About 70% of my contact list consists of addresses that use the name@domain.com format.

The following formats are the most common

Enumerating addresses manually is a long and rather boring task, below are several options on how you can speed up the process.

Email Permutator + automatically generates a list of possible addresses. Just fill in the form fields and wait for him to compile the list.

I modified the pattern matching table, which is easy to find on the net.

These tools will give you a list of possible addresses in seconds. You just have to check these options.
The Chrome extension LinkedIn Sales Navigator (formerly Rapportive) comes in handy for this task .
After installation, go to Gmail, click the "Write" button and paste all the combinations of addresses in the "To" field. When you hover the cursor over the mail, the extension will show to which email the LinkedIn profile is registered.

You can also use Name2Email by Reply.

Gmail will tell you if this address is associated with a Google profile, and the LinkedIn Sales Navigator will tell you if it's on a LinkedIn account (you need to be a LinkedIn member to do this).

If Sales Navigator and Gmail didn't help you find your work email, another option is to ask Google.

After finding the email, you need to check its validity.
With outreach campaigns, you don't have to worry about high "not interested" or unanswered letters (if they are opened and read).
This is a normal situation. Either you have a bad or irrelevant offer for found contacts, or bad content for writing (errors, no logic, bad English, selling style)
The most dangerous situation is when your domain gets into the spam filters of email services (Gmail, Outlook and others). One of the reasons may be the high bounce rate of your newsletter. (Many outdated and non-existent emails.)

List of sites to help you get rid of bad emails:
  1. Zerobounce - we use it in most cases.
  2. Bounceless .
  3. Verify Email Address .
  4. Mailtester .
  5. Verify Email Address .
  6. Verify-email .
  7. Verifalia .
  8. Quick Email Verification .

DuckDuckGo "@ domainname.com" → search

Another unpopular but working way to find email is to use DuckDuckGo. Run a search for an exact match of the domain name with the @ symbol (@ domainname.com), and it will give you the email addresses that refer to it (if they are publicly available). You can add the name of the lead to the request, this will shorten the search time for the desired address.

Twitter as a Lead Search Tool

In the US, it's not uncommon for people to drop their email address in tweet comments. The only protection against parsing that is used is replacing the characters "." and "@" with the words "dot" and "at".
To test this method, open advanced Twitter search, look for the words "dot" and "at" in the tweets of the person you want. Additionally, you can include the words "email", "contact" or "reach" in your search.

It is not uncommon to find unencrypted mail.

Usually such comments and tweets are deleted, but as everyone knows, it is impossible to delete information from the Internet...
Twitter has its own Web Archive - the Snap Bird service. It opens access to all tweets of users (even deleted ones, if indexed)

Ask on Twitter

Repeatedly came across clients who asked to write to them on Twitter.
Since the tweet is limited to 280 characters, it is difficult to explain why you want to contact a contact (lead), write about it and ask for an email to which you can send more information.
So feel free to find this person on Twitter and ask for their email address.

Subscribe to the person you need (social networks, blog, messengers)

Often e-mails are sent from a personal address or one that can be answered with a return letter. Many top managers or business owners have their own blog.
Just reply to one of the mailing list emails by asking a short question or asking your opinion on a topic. He will be pleased.
Among other things, this will provide an excellent opportunity to communicate with an interesting person.
Often, separate email addresses are used for newsletters like newsletter@domainname.com, news@domainname.com, and the like. If you answer them, you may be answered from your personal email address.
Earlier I published an article "How and where to look for leads in the USA", maybe it will come in handy for someone.
One more thing - don't send spam.
If you know any other good ways to search, write to the mail or in the comments, I will be glad.
