Has anyone here read this yet? I believe it came out a few days ago and is supposed to thoroughly document everything "cybercrime", from the rise and fall of Shadowcrew, DM, and Carderplanet to the prominence and dealings of the RBN.

Info from source:

"There's a new book out on Cyber Crime. This one is written by Joseph Menn. Joseph has covered computer security for Financial Times and the Los Angeles times for years.

The book is called Fatal System Error.

The book covers in detail several interesting real-world stories on computer criminals. For example, it covers the history of online crime sites like Carderplanet, Shadowcrew and DarkMarket. It talks about the credit card thefts of Albert Gonzales. It even talks about Ghostnet and some of the targeted attacks that have now been in headlines.

And there's a very detailed rundown on what happened with the so-called Balakov Trio.

The book is scheduled to be released on January 26."

Thoughts?

Loooks brill, love reading books on this stuff, gives you an idea of what not to do lol :P
Will be buying it

Loooks brill

What does this even mean? lol.

Anyway, I just finished this today. It's a very entertaining book, although also very sensationalist. It focuses mainly on DDoS for hire attacks, extortion via DDoS, the incompetence of government security, and the corruption within governments overseas, namely Russia. This last part seems to me where the author went a little overboard with hyperbole, even though deep down I want to believe that many Russian carders have a stranglehold on their nation's government.. I feel like only the RBN is elusive and powerful enough to have infiltrated certain sectors of authority. Perhaps somebody more familiar would like to give their input?

The whole plot of this book is illustrated with a sort of fatalism, like the governments of the free world are fucked and there is no stopping this business. Everyone should go out and card this book, the irony would be hilarious.

Fatal System Error accurately reveals the secretive global cyber cartels and their hidden multi-billion dollar business, proving cybercrime does pay and pays well.

Another good book is "Inside Cyber Warfare: Mapping the Cyber Underworld" by Jeffrey Carr.

It hasn't been released by any scene groups yet and I don't see any independent copies.
