A group of hackers calling themselves Fail0verflow hacked the PlayStation 5 and were able to access all the root keys of the next generation console. According to the group members, the keys are symmetric and are suitable for both encrypting and decrypting files.

As some information security experts suggested, hackers would need special hardware to carry out such an operation, but the team itself denied this statement. Only software was used to obtain the required data. The exploitation of the discovered vulnerability allowed access to the protected sections of the PS5.

With encryption keys in hand, Fail0verflow can reverse engineer a game console's firmware and launch pirated software or additional exploits. For example, third-party firmware on the Xbox 360 allows pirated games to run without having to verify the COA.
