The ruthless actions of criminals make you think about the moral boundaries of evil.
Recently, the non-profit organization Promises2Kids, which supports children in San Diego, California, USA, was attacked by the hacker group Qilin, specializing in the distribution of ransomware. The hackers claimed to have gained access to the organization's confidential information, threatening it with public disclosure unless a ransom was paid.
The Qilin group, also known as Agenda, is known for its attacks on various organizations, including medical institutions and large companies. In this case, they used a double extortion strategy, when in addition to encrypting data, hackers threaten to publish stolen information, which significantly increases the pressure on the victim.
Qilin operates on the "ransomware-as-a-service" (RaaS) model, attracting third-party participants to distribute malware and sharing the ransom with them. The attackers most likely used phishing techniques to initially break into the system, and then used spyware to monitor and manage infected devices.
The attack on Promises2Kids is particularly cynical, given that the organization is dedicated to helping children who have experienced violence and neglect. This causes public outrage and highlights the immorality of cybercriminals who choose such vulnerable targets.
Promises2Kids management has already asked for help from cybersecurity specialists and is working with law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident. At the same time, the organization tried to minimize the impact of the attack, but it is not yet clear whether they were able to prevent a data leak.
In addition to the attack on Promises2Kids, Qilin representatives announced the simultaneous hacking of four more organizations. Among them:
These attacks demonstrate Qilin's targeted actions against organizations of various profiles around the world, which confirms their global ambitions and indifference in choosing targets.
Such incidents confirm the need to pay more attention to data protection and staff training in order to prevent phishing attacks and other forms of cyber threats.
