John McAfee is a crypto security pioneer, millionaire and crypto enthusiast. Having started his career half a century ago, he excited the public to the last with his antics, and the markets with bold predictions. What drove this difficult person? Nonconformity, greed, ambition, attention hunger, paranoia? We'll walk through McAfee's colorful track record, and you will draw the conclusions yourself.

INFO
In connection with the death of John McAfee, we decided to make an article about his biography open for reading without a paid subscription. We also wrote about allegations of fraud, due to which McAfee was arrested and spent 8 months in prison in Spain before his death.

John McAfee: man and antivirus
McAfee was born in the picturesque Forest of Dean in the British county of Gloucestershire in the year the Second World War ended. The family soon moved to the United States, Virginia. His father, who worked as a surveyor, suffered from alcoholism. John was fifteen years old when his father committed suicide. In many interviews, McAfee said that every morning he wakes up with this fact.

“If you remember the sixties, you weren't in them,” says an old American proverb. Let's leave behind the scenes how John McAfee spent "summer of love" with "Maria and Juana". In the late sixties, McAfee worked for a punch card coding company. Here he learns the basics of programming. At the Missouri Pacific Railroad, on the latest IBM mainframe, he adjusts train schedules while using heavy psychedelics. I had to quit to keep the trains from derailing.

McAfee moves to Silicon Valley in the early seventies. He works as a programmer in one of the NASA laboratories, a software designer at UNIVAC, an operating system architect at Xerox, a software consultant at Computer Sciences Corporation and Booz Allen Hamilton. As a doping, McAfee uses traditional Scotch whiskey and cocaine, which is gaining popularity.

The eighties, the beginning of the information age. John McAfee is now thirty-five, and he decided to get hung up on drugs. According to legend, while working at the aerospace company Lockheed, our hero meets the first computer virus for MS-DOS - Brain, developed by brothers Amjad and Bazit Alvi from Pakistan. The program was supposed to punish local pirates who steal software from their firm. Unexpectedly for everyone, Brain went beyond the borders of Pakistan, and infections began all over the world. In the summer of 1987, eighteen thousand computers caught the virus in the United States alone.

I'm pretty good at understanding people. Why do graffiti appear on the walls? People like to mess things up. There will always be hackers.
This inspired McAfee to start an antivirus company, McAfee Associates. Distributing software according to the shareware model is also his idea. By the end of the eighties, the company, originally based in his own home, is bringing McAfee five million ever-dead presidents a year. His antivirus software is used by the world's largest enterprises, but his company is still not among them. In 1992, he carries out his first large-scale PR campaign. With the Michelangelo virus threatening all progressive humanity, McAfee is pumping no worse than Wang with the apocalypse.

On March 6th, up to five million computers can be destroyed by Michelangelo's virus!
All the world's media quoted John McAfee, the tension grew every day, but the promised "bomb" never exploded.

Twenty years later, Sophos employees remember how it was.

The only competitor of John McAfee's company in the American market was Peter Norton Computing (absorbed by Symantec in 1990), which then offered non-commercial products. McAfee Associates successfully goes public and becomes a multi-billion dollar business. Two years later, McAfee sells his stock for one hundred million dollars, beautifully completing his first big game.

As a result of many mergers and acquisitions, McAfee is gaining momentum. In 2010, the food chain reaches a shark like Intel: after lengthy negotiations, it buys back McAfee shares for $ 7.68 billion. By that time, McAfee was already the second most profitable antivirus company in the world and took 7% of the global market. Intel's new subsidiary lawyers are even trying to judicially ban John McAfee from using his own surname as a brand. As a result, the parties came to an amicable agreement, according to which the ban concerns only the sphere of information security.

Meanwhile, the overwhelming majority of users associate McAfee with an annoying program that is installed by default with the ten thousandth update of the Adobe Flash Player browser plug-in. McAfee is tired of letters with curses, especially since he has nothing to do with the product for more than twenty years. The answer was the wonderful video "How to remove McAfee antivirus". Be sure to check it out if you haven't seen it yet!

Yoga and aerial tracking
After the sale of the company, John McAfee writes books on yoga and is engaged in aerial tracking. McAfee is the author of a whole area of so-called relational yoga (this is more a philosophical teaching than a technique, but not at all about databases, as you might think). Educational DVD gurus are available for purchase on Amazon.

In the states of Arizona and New Mexico, the millionaire buys sixty hectares of land for runways, gas stations and a flight school. Creates an informal association "Heavenly Gypsies". You can read more about aerotracking in the article "Popular Mechanics". I can only say that it is a synonym for the words "adrenaline" and "drive", and the rollers of the aerotrackers fit perfectly on the Gogol Bordello.

It was a week when we put on rides for two hundred people, including one 86-year-old granny. It was the happiest day of her life!
"Steep dives" ended tragically. McAfee's 22-year-old nephew Joel Bitow crashed while flying on a hang-glider on the rocks of Death Canyon. Together with him died 61-year-old passenger Robert Gilson, whose family subsequently filed a lawsuit for five million dollars due to the fact that McAfee allowed an under-experienced Bitow to fly. Robert Gilson was an Air Force veteran who, shortly before joining the Sky Gypsies, suffered from meningitis and even fell into a coma.

If you had one hundred million dollars, how would you use it?
  • Would have squandered like McAfee, or better yet!
  • Found a new company immediately. Money is not an end, but a means
  • Would try to invest smarter and spend carefully
  • I would keep it for my life, and give the rest to charity

Belize
The 2008 global financial crisis in the United States hit more than just strippers with two mortgages. John McAfee, who has invested in real estate throughout the country, also lost almost all of his fortune. The PowWow messenger he worked on was sold to the CMGI dot-com incubator back in 1999.

INFO
PowWow was in many ways an innovative product: it supported VoIP telephony, group chats, protocols of the then popular AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) and MSN Messenger.

The former programmer and millionaire sells off assets and moves to Central America with the ambitious idea of a QuorumEx natural antibiotic laboratory. A world-class scientific discovery was taken as a basis - the results of a study by microbiologists Greenberg and Basler on the "sense of quorum" in bacteria. The project was not implemented.

In general, everything that happened in Belize seems to remain in Belize. As Sherlock Holmes put it, "an extremely complicated story." There are several versions of the development of events: the editor of Wired magazine, the hunter for the colorful plot Joshua Davis, who wrote the biography of McAfee John McAfee's Last Stand, the government and officials of the "pirate" Belize and McAfee himself.

beliz.jpg

It will be superfluous to compare versions and seek out the truth, so let's go through the chronology of events that are known for certain.
  • On April 30, 2012, McAfee was arrested in Orange Walk by the Belize Police Organized Crime Unit on charges of producing drugs without a license and possessing unregistered weapons. The charges were dropped in full after a few hours. "Hacker" wrote about this.
  • On November 12, 2012, Belize police launched a search for McAfee in connection with the murder of his neighbor, retired Florida engineer Gregory Vaenta Fall.
  • Fall was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head on 11 November 2012 at his home on Ambergris Key. The police, who came to call the housekeeper, did not find any traces of the break-in. A laptop and an iPhone were missing from personal belongings. The victim was repeatedly arrested in the United States for domestic violence. No official charges were ever brought against anyone.
Reporter Joshua Davis, who was staying at the McAfee villa for a long time, wrote that McAfee surrounded himself with a crowd of armed thugs, a harem of prostitutes and completely lost touch with reality from the constant use of drugs. This resulted in a severe form of paranoia.

McAfee did have armed bodyguards, a pack of fighting dogs (John always loved dogs), and local young women constantly lived in the villa. John called his communication with them a "social experiment" and, after returning to the United States, made American visas for almost everyone.

Social experiment.
John McAfee himself believed that the murderer came for him, but confused at home, and the Belizean police want to take revenge on him. McAfee started a personal blog in which he told how he fought against the local corrupt authorities, organizing a whole spy network for this.

Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow, commenting on the situation, called McAfee a crazy paranoid.

Choose your version of the development of events
  • McAfee definitely didn't share something with a neighbor, and ended badly
  • Most likely, he is innocent, but the government has nothing to do with it.
  • McAfee is not to blame, and the Belizean authorities are behind it all

Escape to Guatemala
McAfee is facing a serious threat to go to a Belizean prison. The businessman announced a reward of 25 thousand dollars to the one who knows the name of the real killer Gregory Fall, changed his appearance and went on the run. He noticed long ago that during the rain, local border guards did not stop anyone for a check, waiting out the bad weather in their cars.

To cross the border between Belize and Guatemala, the day was chosen when forecasters promised a downpour with a probability of one hundred percent. There were other remarkable details in this story: a couple of hours before McAfee moved across the border in the rain, his double tried to do the same - deliberately unsuccessfully, so that he was caught and the police relaxed their vigilance. The "hacker" wrote about this story as well.

A few weeks later, John McAfee was arrested in Guatemala. He invited fellow journalists from Vice.com to visit his secret hideout. By mistake (or was that the plan?) They posted on their website a photo from an iPhone that saved GPS coordinates in the metadata by default.

McAfee later wrote on his blog that he had faked XIF on purpose, but then deleted that page. One way or another, the Guatemalan government refused to grant McAfee political asylum, and the Belizean authorities did not declare the fugitive on the international wanted list. A week later, due to heart problems, the suspect was extradited to the United States and found himself safe.

The latest news of the investigation dates back to 2016: “The Belize Police and the FBI have summoned McAfee's ex-girlfriend Amy Herbert Emschwiller for questioning. McAfee himself still denies his involvement in the crime, but is ready to testify. Not in Belize."

People's candidate
In 2013, John McAfee married Janice Jayson, a Florida prostitute. The newlyweds moved from Portland, Oregon to Lexington, Tennessee. In September 2015, McAfee decided to get involved in party building and announced the future Cyber Party on his YouTube channel.

A little later, McAfee rightly decides that it will be much easier to run for president from the Libertarian Party, the third political force in the country. John speaks at the national convention of libertarians with the campaign program and participates in the final TV debate in March. In the final primaries, McAfee takes third place and wins in the states of Montana and New Hampshire.

Note that John McAfee never changed his political views and always positioned himself as a libertarian.

Would you vote for John McAfee if you had the opportunity?
  • Yes! I like his political views and the name of the party is great
  • For fun or for lack of a better candidate
  • Of course not. In a year, there will be chaos in the country, and he will flee across the border!

McAfee and iPhone
As part of his presidential campaign, John McAfee announced on the air of Russia Today (where he is a frequent guest) that he is ready with the team to help the FBI free of charge to hack the iPhone 5c smartphone of the terrorist from San Bernardino.

A week later, McAfee admitted that he lied, but with good intentions: “I knew that by doing this, I would get the hell out of public attention, which is what happened. That video on my YouTube account already has 700,000 views. My goal was to draw the attention of Americans to the problem of the FBI, which is trying to fool American society. How was I supposed to do it, just state it directly? Nobody would listen to such nonsense. So I came up with something sensational".

A similar situation was repeated with McAfee's statement about a vulnerability in the WhatsApp messenger.

McAfee and cryptocurrencies
The election of the President of the United States was remembered not only for the unexpected victory of Donald Trump, but also for the best result in the history of the candidate from the Libertarian Party - Gary Johnson won 3.3% of the vote.

John McAfee is the CEO of MGT Capital Investments. This enigmatic investment group has just not done vine weaving. Some of her areas of interest include mobile gaming, fantasy sports, drugs, cybersecurity, and bitcoin mining. However, in August 2017, McAfee already changes his position to the chief consultant on cybersecurity, and in February he leaves MGT altogether by agreement with investors.

Meanwhile, McAfee's Twitter chirps as actively as the President of America's Twitter. 825 thousand subscribers follow not only the insane reality show of the McAfee family, but also the recommendations of the "cybersecurity legend" (as John likes to call himself) on investments in cryptocurrencies and ICOs. Because of this, scandals break out regularly. The latter is associated with the Pink Taxi ICO. McAfee even apologized for the developers who completely copied the project of the A2B startup from Lithuania. The promotion is carried out by McAfee Crypto Team - McAfee, Wife & Friends ICO marketing bureau. At the latest, John charges $ 500,000 per tweet.

xxx_john-mcafee_aps.jpg

They say I sold out because I use my tweets to promote, but out of the last two hundred ICOs we turned down 195 and chose five. I only promote what I believe in.
Increased demand for McAfee Crypto Team services had to impose a $ 750 registration fee.

Previously, McAfee ran the "Coin of the Day" column, in which he described the merits of a relatively unknown cryptocurrency every day, after which its course was rapidly "tuzemunil". After accusations of pump-and-dump games, John switched to a weekly format, and then completely abandoned the heading, under which trading bots had already begun to write.

On New Year's Eve, hackers hacked McAfee's Twitter and within a few minutes made recommendations to buy four coins: Basic Attention Token (BAT), Nxt (NXT), Siacoin (SC) and Patientory (PTOY). All coins received short-term lightning rallies and then plummeted below their normal trading levels.

You've probably heard of the story where McAfee promised (literally?) To eat his dick on national television if Bitcoin didn't hit half a million dollars. Later, with another rise in the rate, he made an amendment: a million dollars per bitcoin by the end of 2020. Someone has already made a site fnordprefekt.de, which allows you to monitor how the forecast comes true.

McAfee in the movies
John McAfee has always "wrote life beautifully, without a draft." Of course, his story caught the attention of filmmakers. The documentary Gringo: The Dangerous Life of John McAfee was released last year. Canadian filmmakers are filming the documentary Who Is McAfee. Billy Corben, director of the acclaimed Cocaine Cowboys, is working on a documentary mini-series The McAfee Project.

Last year, a fictional film about McAfee's adventures in Belize “King of the Jungle” based on the book by Joshua Davis was announced - the rights to his story were bought by Warner Brothers. In 2013, Davis, along with his namesake Birman, founded the EPIC magazine, stories from which are very popular in Hollywood. Birman received an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for Operation Argo. So it should be epic! According to the latest news, Johnny Depp has been confirmed for the lead role. Although McAfee himself wanted to be played by Morgan Freeman.
