The role of social networks in the modern world can hardly be overestimated. They have become not only a familiar communication medium for users, but also a powerful marketing tool.It is not surprising that following the use of the possibilities of such communications to promote brands, there is also the development of new sales potential. Along with the rapid development of electronic payment systems, they are also being integrated with social networks.

According to Pavel Sidelev, General Director of the Ukrainian company LLC Payment Systems, alternative payments on the Internet, including in social networks, are beginning to confidently gain momentum.
The fast pace of people's lives, employment, the habit of carrying out many transactions online require web developers of social networks to provide payment services for goods and services in conjunction with various payment systems.

The most popular social network Facebook has already acquired its own payment system for a long time. By the way, the company was not as successful as expected, it placed its shares on the NASDAQ on May 18 and now is in dire need of innovations that can rectify the situation. The social network's own payment system, which not everyone is aware of, is Facebook Credits. It offers a secure, easy and fast way to pay for virtual goods, games and apps on Facebook. Among the advantages of Facebook Credits, the developers themselves note the following:
- Support for more than 80 payment methods in more than 50 countries of the world, including in such European countries as the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, Austria, Ukraine, Russia, etc.
- The ability to make purchases and payments in a convenient way for the client from any platform: both from a stationary computer and from mobile devices.
- High level of user confidence in the integrated payment system due to the achieved Facebook brand awareness.

So far, payments are limited to virtual values within the network itself. However, due to the growing popularity of interaction between Facebook Credits and offline marketing, there has recently been more and more talk about whether the introduction of its own payment system may indicate the intention of the largest social network to become a more serious and influential player in the payment market. As reported online edition Venturebeat, in fact, Facebook has already become a significant player in the payments industry. This happened thanks to the same payment system Facebook Credits, as well as huge amounts of income from advertisers. With such a financial turnover, Facebook Credits could directly cooperate with the world's leading payment systems - Visa and MasterCard, without using the services of intermediary banks and thus saving money.

One of the reasons for the activation of Facebook Credits payments, analysts say, is the growing competition between Facebook and Google Adsense services (advertising on third-party websites with the deduction of a portion of the profit to publishers). Facebook, which has implemented its “Like” and “Share” buttons on all kinds of resources, has an excellent chance of becoming a leader where others did well before. That being said, ease of payment is often seen as an argument for Facebook, as users in many countries note that it is difficult to work with Google checks.

According to the blog splatf.com, thanks to the Facebook share placement, it was revealed that payments accounted for 15% of the company's total revenue over the past year. Compared to the current leader in the payments market - PayPal - Facebook's payment business is not that small at the moment. It was 15% of the PayPal size at the end of 2011. Whereas in the first quarter this figure was 9%. If we compare the revenues of companies, then in the fourth quarter of last year, the payment business of Facebook brought in a profit of $ 188 million. This figure, according to the company's management, should be reduced by 30%. At the same time, PayPal's net revenue was about 4% of the $ 33 billion in fourth-quarter payment volumes (about $ 1.3 billion).

Facebook's own payment system has not become an obstacle to the development of alternative payments. A month ago, Reuters reported that the Belgian payment company Paycento is introducing a new online payment system for social networks Facebook and Twitter. To activate it, users need to create an account in the Paycento system and link their Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin profiles to it. After that, you can pay for content on sites using likes and tweets.

Today it also became known that Facebook plans to launch a new service for payment for services in Russia, as well as a system of money transfers between users. According to sources close to the negotiations, Bank24.ru and Russian Standard may become partners of the social network.

The second most popular social networking site, Twitter, has become a powerful news, information and communication service, but has not yet expanded its potential as a commercial platform. Although this social network already has two of its own payment instruments: Twippr and Twitpay. They are integrated with the PayPal payment system. These services provide users with the ability to send and receive money online using direct messages from their Twitter account. The payment systems Twippr and Twitpay are quite capable of turning this network into an online commercial platform.

Another startup volunteered to make Twitter an indispensable tool for brands, organizations and users in the field of selling online goods, organizing crowdfunding and accepting payments. The name of this service is Chirpify, as reported online edition Gigaom. You can use this payment platform in three ways: to promote brands, to carry out P2P transactions, and to collect charitable funds. The company (person) publishes a tweet with commercial content, and if any user responds positively to it, the money is debited from the latter's account. The only caveat is that Chirpify itself is connected to the PayPal payment system, which means there are additional commissions and dependence on a third company. These services create prerequisites for the development of payments, but unlike Facebook, Twitter has not yet become a full-fledged player in the payment market.

What about payments in Ukrainian and Russian social networks? In Runet and Uanet, two social networks are clearly distinguished - Odnoklassniki and Vkontakte.

Since 2010, you can pay for services in Odnoklassniki (and these are special statuses, ratings, gifts, etc.) using a QIWI wallet and some Internet banks (for example, FUIB online). Alfa-Bank has taken this issue even further - it introduced a new online service that allows users to pay for various services and goods (mobile communications, Internet, utility bills, etc.) directly from the Odnoklassniki.ru website. At the same time, there is no commission. But this event caused a lot of controversial assessments in the Russian Internet. “Not obvious,” it is reported on the roem.ru portal, - is the increase in time on the site the main purpose of the application. It is also unclear who bears the cost of processing payments. An even bigger question is the question of support. Odnoklassniki themselves are unlikely to cope with this task, since the level of technical support for users of the site is extremely low. At the same time, in Online Payments, the border between Alfa-Bank and the social network is blurred, and users will turn to both companies for support."

As a result, we can say that this payment application "Odnoklassniki" competes mainly with banks. And, given the coverage of the social network and the underdevelopment of Internet banking services in many Russian banks, Online Payments certainly has a prospect. The whole question will be in support and the source of financing costs.

The "younger" social network "Vkontakte" has its own payment system. Each user has his own personal account, from which he can pay for various services. At the same time, you can buy not only balls and gifts, but also pay for purchases in external online stores without commission. Among the payment instruments used for this are bank cards, QIWI Wallet, WebMoney, Yandex.Money, Google Checkout, Paypal, Money Mail, RBK Money, Robokassa, 2pay and Money Online, Privat24 Internet banking.
Like their foreign counterparts from social networks, Vkontakte representatives say they are planning to take over Runet. Considering that the Vkontakte audience is 120 million, and many users have no experience of using Internet wallets, it is highly likely that the network will be able to quickly bring its payment system to a fairly high level.

The rapid growth of both social media audiences and the e-commerce market suggests that electronic payments on social media are a very promising area. The success of Facebook may well inspire social networks to create their own payment systems. Indeed, according to Natalya Khaitina, Deputy General Director of Yandex.Money payment system, “any popularization of payment for purchases on the Internet using a method other than cash on delivery or a bank receipt is a blessing both for the electronic money market as a whole and for all its players”.
