Discord developers launched end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for audio and video calls last night. Users are advised to update the mobile and desktop app to the latest version.
The official Discord blog claims that the E2EE protocol, dubbed DAVE (Discord Audio & Video Encryption), has been independently verified.
"Starting today, we are introducing E2EE for voice and video messages in private messages, as well as Go Live streams and channels. The messenger now provides the ability to make sure that end-to-end encryption is used and verify call participants".
"The development and implementation of DAVE has been verified by Trail of Bits, an independent cybersecurity company".
At the same time, it is emphasized that new keys are generated every time someone leaves the chat or joins it. Discord itself does not have access to encryption keys, and only their members can view audio and video content in chats.
Note separately that text messages in private chats will not use E2EE, as Discord reserves the right to moderate them if necessary.
