How Diebold PIN Offset Actually Works (Exact Algorithm)​

Diebold uses a modified IBM 3624 method with a specific validation table.

Step-by-step calculation (copy-paste formula):
  1. Take the last 12 digits of the PAN (exclude check digit)
  2. Pad with leading zeros if needed to 16 digits (Diebold uses 16-digit DES key)
  3. Apply Diebold validation table to each digit:
    Code:
    0→0  1→1  2→2  3→3  4→4
    5→6  6→7  7→8  8→9  9→5
  4. Result = 16-digit decimal number
  5. Encrypt with Diebold DES key (secret – different per bank)
  6. Take first 4 digits → natural PIN
  7. Customer PIN minus natural PIN = offset (stored on Track 2)

Real example calculation (step-by-step):
PAN: 4147091234567890 Last 12 digits: 091234567890 Pad to 16: 0000091234567890

Apply validation table: 0→0 0→0 0→0 0→0 0→0 9→5 1→1 2→2 3→3 4→4 5→6 6→7 7→8 8→9 9→5 0→0

Result: 0000051234678950

Encrypt with bank DES key → first 4 digits = 3821 (natural PIN)

Customer chooses PIN 5678 Offset = 5678 - 3821 = 1857

Track 2 with offset:

Why Diebold Offset Still Works in 2025 (But Only on Legacy ATMs)​

  • Diebold offset only matters for offline ATMs (6–8 % in Mexico/DR)
  • Public dumps = fake offset → fine for online POS, useless on Diebold
