The UK government is stepping up data protection.

The UK government has announced that the data centers have been granted the status of "Critical National Infrastructure" (CCD), which puts them on a par with power systems and water supply. The move aims to improve the protection and recovery of data centers in the event of critical incidents, which will minimize the damage to the economy and ensure the stability of critical services such as healthcare and financial systems.

The decision was made against the backdrop of the announcement of Europe's largest data center project in Hertfordshire with an investment of almost £4 billion. The project is expected to create more than 700 local jobs and support about 14,000 tech jobs across the country. The move underscores the importance of data centers to the economy, as they store and process vast amounts of data, from personal photos to medical records.

The designation of the CED allows the government to be more proactive in supporting the sector in the event of emergencies, such as cyberattacks or weather disasters. As part of the new policy, a dedicated team will be created to monitor threats and coordinate access to security and emergency services. This will strengthen confidence in the UK as a safe place to invest in digital infrastructure.

The importance of these measures has been highlighted by recent incidents such as a cyberattack on a provider, which resulted in the disruption of 60% of the country's healthcare facilities. Designating data centers as CIS will help prevent similar catastrophic consequences in the future and ensure the reliability of the digital infrastructure.

The government also plans to strengthen cyber defense through the introduction of a new law on cybersecurity and resilience, which will make the protection of critical infrastructure supply chains mandatory. This will strengthen the UK's position as one of the leaders in data protection and give an additional impetus to the development of the sector.
