By type of crime, the most striking indicator is computer fraud — 304,819 crimes registered in the first nine months of this year, which is 22.8 percent more than in the same period in 2022.

Data on the increase or decrease in crime in Spain under various sections of the criminal code was published by the official portal of Moncloa-the government (former royal) palace.

Computer fraud

For many years now, a special place in the crime balance has been occupied by criminal offences included in the category of "ordinary crimes" ("criminalidad convencional"), the number of which in the first nine months of this year was 1,489,660, and crimes committed in cyberspace or using digital means, the number of which in the same period was 337 251.

Compared to the same period last year, "ordinary crimes", which account for 81.5 percent of the total number of criminal offenses, increased by 1.9 percentage points. As for "cybercrime", which accounts for 18.5 percent of registered criminal offenses, it has increased by 21.5 percent compared to 2022.

By type of crime, the most striking indicator is computer fraud — 304,819 crimes registered in the first nine months of this year, which is 22.8 percent more than in the same period in 2022. This type of crime accounts for 90.4 percent of all cybercrimes and 16.7 percent of all crimes recorded during this period.

Crimes against sexual freedom

As for crimes against sexual freedom, the number increased by 12 percent between January and September 2023 compared to the same period of the previous year. This increase is partly due to the active policy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to raise awareness and reduce social tolerance for this type of crime, which has led to a greater willingness of victims to report them.

Illicit drug trafficking

Crimes related to drug trafficking increased by 8.9 percent (15,750 crimes registered during this period). Since this type of criminal activity is not reported by the population, this figure is actually an indicator of increased police activity in this area within the framework of specific action plans, such as the Special Security Plan for Campo de Gibraltar.

The "Crime Balance" released by the Ministry of the Interior also provides data on registered criminal offences broken down by autonomous communities, provinces, provincial capitals, cities with populations of more than 20,000 inhabitants and the island territories of Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Gomera, El Hierro, La Palma, Tenerife, Ibiza, Formentera, Majorca and Minorca.

The document is now compiled on the basis of data not for 250 municipalities, as before, but for 417, which indicates a firm intention to increase the amount of information provided by the department, the official portal of Moncloa, the government (former royal) palace, cheerfully states.
