The platform was quick to reassure its customers, but will it be able to return the stolen cryptocurrency?

Cryptocurrency exchange CoinEx has confirmed a hacker attack, which resulted in the theft of cryptocurrencies worth about $ 31 million from the platform.

According to an official statement posted on the X social network, the company found "abnormal withdrawals" from several wallets used to store the crypto platform's assets.

A special investigation team has identified several unauthorized transactions with ETH, TRON and Polygon coins. Data on the amount of damage is still being clarified, but according to analytical companies in the field of cryptocurrency, the confirmed damage has already amounted to about $ 31 million.

Researchers from the blockchain security claim that cryptocurrencies worth approximately $ 19 million in ETH, $ 11.5 million in TRON, and $ 295,000 in Polygon were stolen from the CoinEx platform.

CoinEx said the stolen funds represent a "very small fraction" of the platform's total assets. The company assured users of the security of their assets and promised 100% compensation to the victims of this violation.

In an additional statement, CoinEx said it was able to identify and isolate the wallets associated with the attack. Work on creating a solution for victims is already underway.

After a brief lull in early 2023, several different cryptocurrency platforms have already experienced the theft of cryptocurrency assets. These include Exactly Protocol, Harbor Protocol, and Vyper. Some of the latest incidents have already been attributed to hackers from the Lazarus group, which is supposed to report to the North Korean government.

According to research firm Chainalysis, 2022 was a record year for hackers targeting cryptocurrency companies. The total damage amounted to about $ 3.8 billion, which is 500 million more than in 2021.
